Camryn Rogers has once again written her name in the history books.
Richmond, B.C. The 25-year-old won gold Tuesday and became the first Canadian to win a medal in the women’s hammer throw at the Olympics.
Rogers’ top throw at the Stade de France was 76.97 metres. Annette Echikunwoke of the United States won silver (75.48) and Zhao Ji of China won bronze (74.27).
“To be on that stage and hear the national anthem, it’s something I feel like I’ve dreamed of for a very long time,” Rogers said.
“I started throwing 12 and a half years ago. That summer was the London (2102) Olympics. Seeing our Canadian women out there do their best and represent our country so well. I knew I would Wanted to stay here all day.
Rogers made history in her Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games in 2021 when she became the first Canadian woman to advance to an Olympic hammer throw final. She stood fifth.
“It’s a whirlwind of emotions, but as soon as the competition ended, I felt like I went into shock,” Rogers told CBC Sports’ Devin Heroux.
“I looked up, and I saw my coaches and my family, who had come here from Richmond, B.C., from New Zealand, from California, and I just felt nothing but love and support and the fact that I Being able to share this moment with them is what makes it special for me.”
Rogers is the world’s top-ranked hammer thrower and enters the Games having won silver at the 2022 World Championships and gold at last year’s World Championships. She is the first and only Canadian woman to win a medal at the world level in the hammer throw.
On Sunday, B.C. Nanaimo’s Ethan Katzberg won the men’s event, with Rogers’ victory completing Canada’s gold medal victory in the hammer throw.
“Coming into this [final] today, the experiences I’ve had, the ups and downs, it’s all been learning moments,” Rodgers said.
“Coming to this moment, getting to that fifth round, it’s a do-or-die moment. To be able to make it when it counts, to make that throw.

On his second-last throw of the night, Camryn Rogers found another gear.
Sitting in second place on the leaderboard, Rogers turned and dropped the hammer in the middle of the field. It crossed the 75 meter mark and landed at a height of 76.97 metres. In a tight field where Rogers was trailing first China’s Jia Zhao and later America’s Annette Echikunwoke, Rogers ultimately moved herself into gold medal position.
No other thrower in the field could match this. As Rogers stepped into the box for her final throw, she had already won the gold. She fouled the last throw, then knelt on the ground and raised her hands to her face, but was not at all able to hide her tears.
Ichikunwoke – the only other competitor to cross the 75 m mark – won the silver medal with a throw of 75.48 m, while Zhao finished third with a best throw of 74.27 m.
When Rogers made her Olympic debut in Tokyo, she was a 22-year-old college student at the University of California, Berkeley and finished fifth. Since then, she has become a professional athlete at the top of her game.

Rogers’ throw came two days after Canada’s Ethan Katzberg won the men’s hammer event with a throw of 84.12 metres. Both throwers are from British Columbia, which has become the home of the country’s greatest hammer throw coaches and athletes and is the only province in Canada where high school students compete in the hammer throw. Cal had not won an individual gold medal in track and field since Gwynn Smith won the pole vault gold medal at the 1948 London Games. Rogers is the Golden Bears’ only individual gold medalist in track and field, along with Smith and 400 meter specialist Archie Williams (1936).
Three years after finishing fifth at the Tokyo Olympics, Rogers had to fight back twice to win.
She took an early lead with a throw of 243-1 (74.11 m) in the first round, but China’s 21-year-old Ji Zhou took the lead in the second round with a throw of 243-8 (74.27 m).
Rogers took the lead with a third-round effort of 244-4 (74.47), but it did not last long. The surprise winner at the US trials, 28-year-old American Annette Nneka Echikunwoke delivered a season-best throw of 247-8 (75.48) to take the top spot after three rounds.
Rogers moved closer to Echikunwoke with a fourth-round throw of 247-6 (75.44) and then followed up with the winning mark on his fifth attempt. That throw is still short of Rogers’ personal best of 257-11 (78.62), which places him fifth on the all-time world list.
