In a stunning victory, Team USA’s Cole Hawker not only won the gold medal in the men’s 1,500 meters at the Stade de France at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday, but broke the Olympic record with a time of 3:27.65.

World champion Josh Kerr of Britain won the silver medal with a time of 3:27.79 and Yared Nuguese of the United States won the bronze medal with a personal best time of 3:27.80. Hawker came from behind with a blistering pace in the final stages to overtake Kerr and break the Olympic record of 3:28.32 set by Norway’s Jacob Ingebrigtsen at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
With 100 meters to go, I knew I had enough,” Hawker said. “I haven’t watched the race replays or anything, but I saw Jacob, I felt like he was thinking about Kerr And started moving out, and I thought I’d take advantage of that and try to push him inside, which I’ve been able to do a few times in my career.

He’s a pretty smart racer and he shut it down right away, so I had to re-evaluate. To be able to attack not just once, but twice was special.”

Hawker is the fourth American to win an Olympic gold medal in the 1,500.
