The Dallas Mavericks have begun to rebuild their team to take a step forward and win an NBA title next season, and they started by trading Tim Hardaway.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Dallas Mavericks acquired shooting guard Quentin Grimes from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for shooting guard Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks.
In the final year of a four-year, $75 million contract, the 32-year-old Hardaway is owed $16.2 million. In the final year of his rookie deal, the 24-year-old Grimes is owed $4.3 million. Thanks to the trade, the Mavs can now use a portion of the $12.9 million non-taxpayer midtier exception. With Hardaway joining the books, Dallas was reduced to a middling $5.2 million taxpayer.
The Mavericks’ starting small forward Derrick Jones Jr. was described by general manager Nico Harrison last week as the team’s “Priority 1A and 1B” for the offseason. Jones, the team’s top perimeter defender, was on a veteran’s minimum deal during the previous campaign.
Hardaway, who plays mostly as the Mavs’ sixth man, averaged 14.4 points per game this season. But his role was diminished in the final stages of the regular season and postseason. In four of the Mavs’ final eight games in the Western Conference and NBA Finals, he was not on the field due to a coach’s decision.

After Hardaway joined the Dallas Mavericks as a part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade with the New York Knicks in January 2019, he played five and a half seasons there. During his time with the Mavs, he averaged 15.2 points per game.
