World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson returns home for the fourth time in his professional career. Unlike their last encounter in Newark, New Jersey, the crowd at the Prudential Center did not enjoy their local champion’s knockout victory.
But he worked methodically against challenger Artem Harutyunyan to win his first WBC title defense via unanimous decision, despite taking 12 full rounds.
Stevenson (22-0-0, 10 KOs) entered Saturday night looking to continue his winning streak in the lightweight division. Harutyunyan (12-2-0, 7 KOs) came out of the gate with more energy, running around the wrong way to disrupt Stevenson’s game plan.
His plan worked on defense but he struggled to land punches on Stevenson, who demonstrated a masterclass in avoiding punches.
As the bout progressed, Stevenson regained his rhythm and defeated Harutyunyan. By the end of Round 6, ESPN data showed that Stevenson landed 74 of 163 punches (45%).
This was miles better than Harutyunyan’s 31 out of 195 (16%). Stevenson won with the judges scoring the fight 119-109, 118-110, 116-112 in his favor.
However, this was not a sure thing. Fans and announcers got a big surprise in the co-main event between WBC World Super Featherweight Champion O’Shakey Foster and Robson Conceição. Foster was in control throughout the match but Conceição won via split decision (116–112, 112–116, 115–113).
Despite Harutyunyan’s aggression in the subsequent rounds, there would be no surprise results. Stevenson entered Saturday’s bout as finished as he was: WBC world lightweight champion.
Harutyunyan was active from the start and advanced much further than Stevenson to start the fight. Stevenson caught him several times with counter punches while staying out of range. His defense was on full display in the first frame.

And for the second fight in a row, Stevenson put up a tough challenge against a major underdog. In November, Stevenson won a weak decision over Edwin de los Santos, a fight in which neither boxer landed double-digit punches in any round.
Stevenson was determined to provide even more entertainment this time, but could not be stopped. Stevenson, one of boxing’s best defensive fighters, was a -3500 favorite against Harutyunyan, according to ESPN BET.
“It’s hard to prove you’re the best if you don’t have a fighter trying to fight; he’s just trying to survive,” said Stevenson, 27. “…I wanted him to try.” Do. A little harder so it can be a more fun fight.
“I did everything I could to get it out of there, too. I had to cut the rings a little more. … I’m going back to the gym and working on cutting the rings.”
There was a lot of brawling during the final two rounds, in what was mostly an uneventful bout. Stevenson said the pranksters’ target was Harutyunyan because “he’s not really trying to put up a fight.” Harutyunyan landed double-digit punches in only one round, the ninth round.

Meanwhile, Stevenson attacked Harutyunyan’s body several times, landing 66 such shots. The champions defeated the challengers 170–74 on aggregate. Stevenson controlled the range with his jab, was able to block Harutyunyan’s attacks and counter with sharp combinations of his own.

The Armenian suffered cuts under both eyes and emerged with bruises scattered around his face. Harutyunyan, 33, represented Germany in the 2016 Olympics and won a bronze medal. At those same Games in Rio De Janeiro, Stevenson captured a silver medal two weight classes below at bantamweight.
Stevenson went on to win titles at 126, 130 and 135 pounds, where he currently reigns. All of his 22 pro fights have been promoted by Top Rank, but Stevenson now enters free agency. He rejected a five-fight extension offer that would have guaranteed him $3 million per bout, sources told ESPN.
“I want to fight the best fighters in boxing,” Stevenson said. “That’s how you’re going to get to see the best version of me, when you put me in the ring with someone else that wants to fight back and compete.”
Such a marquee fight has thus far eluded Stevenson. He’s rated No. 3 by ESPN at lightweight. The division’s top two boxers, Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko, are in negotiations to fight later this year.
“If they don’t fight me, they don’t fight me,” Stevenson said. “I’m just going to stay in the gym and be ready.”
