DeRozan — a six-time All-Star who turns 35 next month — is coming off an impressive three-year scoring run with the Bulls, in which he made the All-Star team in each of his first two campaigns before averaging 24 Was. I’m struggling to decide whether this was the most ambitious trade of the summer or the least ambitious. Either way, with the San Antonio Spurs-Sacrmato Kings-Chicago Bulls deal first reported late Saturday night, all three parties certainly needed a minute to digest it.
Let’s start at the top: To acquire DeRozan in a sign-and-trade, the Kings are sending two seconds and reserve guard Chris Duarte to the Bulls and Harrison Barnes and an unprotected 2031 pick swap to the Spurs. I haven’t seen the same amount of money reported in two different places yet, but based on outgoing contracts and the Kings’ tax situation, it appears DeRozan will be due around $24 million on a three-year deal in 2024-25. I have some conflicting thoughts about the Kings which I’ll get into in a minute, but in terms of raw price, I’m not sure they would have paid a ridiculous price. In a vacuum, a pick swap and two seconds to turn Barnes into DeRozan isn’t unreasonable, even at DeRozan’s age (he turns 35 next month).
For Chicago, it’s too little, too late. The Bulls could have gotten even more for DeRozan if they had not waited until he became a free agent, or if they had gotten the toxic money themselves instead of letting the Spurs get paid for it.
