LA Clippers point guard Russell Westbrook has opted out of the final year of his contract, which will pay him just over $4 million in 2024-25, according to a team source. By turning the deal into a sign-and-trade, the Clippers can give Dunn a 3-year, $17 million contract without using the salary cap exception. The convenience of the deal would essentially give the Jazz a free second-round swap.

The cash coming from the Clippers in the deal will cover the buyout of Westbrook.
Westbrook’s $3.8 million salary will count toward Utah’s salary cap next season, but it won’t have much of an impact on the team since Utah is under the cap. Utah is not expected to use significant cap space this offseason unless it has to negotiate and extend an extension with Lauri Markkanen.

Westbrook, a nine-time All-Star and the 2017 MVP for Oklahoma City, was traded for the fifth time in his career. Over the past 18 months he has now been traded to Utah by both franchises in his native Los Angeles.
