Following the duel between Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy at the US Open last month, both are off to a poor start in windy conditions at Royal Troon in the first round of the British Open on Thursday morning.
DeChambeau shot six-over 42 on the front nine, including a double bogey on the par-5 sixth.
According to SI.com, the US Open champion shot 1-under on the back to at least keep himself somewhat in the mix after missing several short putts early on due to his struggles.
DeChambeau, who has finished in the top-10 in five British Opens, was confident he could advance in the tournament.
“[I’m] obviously very confident,” DeChambeau told reporters on Wednesday, according to CBS Sports. “It all depends on whether I am hitting it well or not. Obviously after a big championship win I can come here with the most confidence.
Played well last week too. What really matters is whether I can continue to drive the ball the way I can and hit my irons the way I know how and the way I can. I know I can. If I do those three things well, even chipping and bunker play and four things on the greens, I’ll give myself a chance.
“I know how to get the job done. It’s just a matter of whether I’m as consistent as I was last week at the US Open and some other places as well. If I can play golf like I used to, I think I’ll give myself a bigger chance.
McIlroy, who missed two short putts in the final three holes to lead the U.S. Open title, he will have to struggle to participate in this major competition.
Postage Stamp McIlroy was tied for par through seven holes before double-bogeying the 8th hole when his second shot from the bunker landed back on his feet after leaving short.
The Northern Irishman compounded his problems by driving out of bounds near train tracks on the par-4 11th, leading to another.

About two hours into Rory McIlroy’s first round at the 152nd Open you began to wonder if any of them were asking what exactly he was doing on the links on a summer day.

That year he shot 65 on the second day, but still missed the cut, and he admitted here that it would all be him. This time we can make it.

The round started badly with a bogey on the first when he missed a 10-foot putt. He managed to make it back with his solo birdie at the third. It was only when he reached the famous 8th, the postage stamp of the Royal Troon, that things really took a turn for the worse. McIlroy’s tee shot caught the right edge of the small green, wobbled for a moment, and rolled into an unforgiving putt bunker below it.

He tried to bounce it, but misjudged the shot, and the ball bounced back down the slope and landed a few inches in front of where he stood in the sand.
You can guess at which point, he might have wished he were back among all those oblivious New Yorkers instead of surrounded by a few thousand stony-faced Scots. McIlroy took two more shots to get in from there.

In the toughest first round of The Open in over a decade, both McIlroy and DeChambeau suffered poor early-round performances at Royal Troon, leaving them more focused on the cut than the contenders.
For McIlroy, his Thursday 78 was his worst since his opening 79 at the 2019 Open at Royal Portrush. Just like that, when he was trying to end his decade-long major-less drought, he was 10 shots behind.
At the end of a brief conversation with reporters, McIlroy was asked if, like in ’19, he felt he was too far behind. He paused for five seconds and wrinkled his face to consider the question.
Ultimately, he said, “I just need to focus on tomorrow and try to make the cut.”
His task – which had grown to a 13-shot deficit by the end of the day – was made more difficult by some uncharacteristic mistakes from a player who was in comfortable rhythm with his swing.
Even after his first seven holes, McIlroy settled for a 120-yard postage stamp on the first, where he missed right, leaving his second shot in a deep bunker and leaving with double bogey.
He then compounded his mistake by hitting just miles off the tee on 11, out of bounds, and recording another double. He added three more bogeys to return home in 40.
So, what went wrong?
With Troon’s front nine playing predominantly into the wind and to the right – a significant departure from the early week’s practice rounds from a different direction – McIlroy found himself playing off the tee due to the additional options. That indecision caused him to hit only half of the fairways, resulting in only seven greens overall – his worst output of the season.
“I’ve got to do a better job in these situations,” McIlroy said, “and I’ve got to go out there and play better and try to shoot some.”

Rory McIlroy missed several shots in difficult weather conditions at Royal Troon in a forgettable first round at The Open.
He made a double bogey on the eighth hole of the Postage Stamp and his chances of winning the Open now look very slim. Only two of the last nine winners of the tournament have had double bogey during the week.

McIlroy was at five over par after the bogey and was looking quite frustrated after two attempts to get out of a particularly difficult bunker.
“I felt like I played well the first part of the round, but then I missed the green on the stamp and went double,” he said.
“But I still felt like I was in a pretty good position after the double over until the ninth, thinking I could probably get some of those shots back.
“I was really surprised how hard the back nine played. I thought we were going to take it a little easy, but the course was going hard and the conditions were very difficult with a wind that we haven’t seen so far this week.
“When that happens you play your practice rounds and come up with a strategy that you think is going to work around the golf course, but then when you get an environment that you haven’t played in it’s different- “Starts to offer different options.”
McIlroy’s 78 on Thursday was his highest score at a major since finishing with a 79 at Royal Portrush in the 2019 Open, according to golf data journalist Justin Ray.
