Paul Skenes struck out 11 in seven no-hit innings in another impressive performance and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 on Thursday.

Skenes, in his 11th major league start, threw 99 pitches, 65 of which were for strikes. The All-Star right-hander took a step forward, lowering his ERA to 1.90.

“It just comes down to going out there and executing,” Skenes said. “So, if that’s what a strikeout looks like, that’s what it’s going to be. It’s just about getting outs.”
Colin Holderman replaced Skeens (6-0) and gave up a leadoff single to Jake Bauers for Milwaukee’s first hit. The Brewers loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Holderman escaped the jam when he struck out William Contreras swinging.

Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his fourth save and completed a two-hitter for Pittsburgh.

Skane, the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft out of LSU, struck out 11 while pitching six no-hit innings in his second start for Pittsburgh on May 17 at the Chicago Cubs. He has allowed two or fewer runs in nine of his 11 major league starts.

“I don’t think anyone thinks this is going to happen when you get to the big leagues,” Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton said.

According to ESPN Stats, the Pirates’ last no-hitter came on July 12, 1997, in a combined effort against the Houston Astros.

Skenes struck out his final 16 batters and struck out eight in the span. He is up to 89 strikeouts in 66⅓ innings.

“Guys in the major leagues have velo, but being able to pitch and throw anything at any time, he keeps you off balance,” said Milwaukee slugger Christian Yelich. “I really thought we did a really good job against him today. I think we could have done a better job of getting him out of the game early. I think we left him with some aggressive at-bats at the end “

Pittsburgh beat the Brewers 12–2 on Tuesday and lost 9–0 on Wednesday. Milwaukee had won nine consecutive home series.
Phillies veteran Zack Wheeler will skip his scheduled start on Sunday and use the upcoming All-Star break to recover from back problems.

Wheeler, a two-time NL All-Star, left his last start in Tuesday’s 10-1 win over the Dodgers after five innings because of back spasms. After the game, the 34-year-old right-hander said he had been struggling with a back problem for several weeks.

Wheeler had an MRI on Wednesday which showed no structural damage. He also reported Wednesday that he was feeling sore, but manager Rob Thomson said Thursday that his pitcher is feeling better.
Wheeler is 10-4 with a 2.70 ERA in 19 starts for the major league-leading Phillies.

“We will take precautionary measures,” Thomson said. “We’ll get him in the line after the break. We haven’t got him in the line yet, but we’ll make sure to take care of him.”

Wheeler could be pushed back to July 23, barring Sunday’s planned start, which would give him a two-week break.

He was not going to pitch in the All-Star Game on Tuesday night as he was originally scheduled to start on Sunday. There is no information on whether he is planning to travel to Texas for the festivities.

Thompson hasn’t said who will start in Wheeler’s place in the finale of the three-game set against Oakland, but he hinted it could be a bullpen game.

Record

It was the second time he took a no-hitter deep into a game, as he had a no-hitter in six innings in his second major league start, but pitched 100 in that outing.

When he was dismissed, his Pittsburgh Pirates were leading 1–0.
Each of Skenes’ last two innings saw a new career-high in pitches: 102 on June 29, and then 107 his last time out.

Skenes needed only six pitches to sit back out in the seventh inning, but given his strikeout potential, it’s possible he’ll need more than 120 pitches to finish the job.
The Pirates made him the No. 1 overall pick last year, and after dominating the minors, they called him up in May — now, he’s already in the conversation for best pitcher in the game.

Earlier this month, Skenes became the first pitcher to be selected to the All-Star Game a year after being drafted.

With his performance on Thursday, he brought his ERA down to 1.90 – however, he has not yet pitched enough innings to qualify for the ERA title (one inning per team game), and he likely will not. . Skenes has 59.1 innings pitched this year, and must finish the year with 162.0 to qualify.

He has struck out 11.8 batters per nine innings, which is the second-best mark in baseball among players who pitch at least 50 innings. His ERA as required is the second-best mark behind Reynaldo López’s 1.71.
