“Multiple people” could be charged in connection with the death of Friends star Matthew Perry from a ketamine overdose last year, according to a law enforcement source.

People reports that the source claimed the investigation into Perry’s death is “nearing its conclusion” and that law enforcement officials believe “multiple people” should be charged.

He also said the U.S. Attorney’s Office would make the final decision on whether to file charges.
A spokesperson for the US Attorney’s Office told The Independent they had no comment on the case.

Nearly seven months after Perry’s death at the age of 54 in October 2023, an investigation was launched at both the federal and local levels into who supplied the actor with the ketamine that led to his death.

Cause of death

Charges could be brought against several people in the federal investigation into who supplied ketamine to actor Matthew Perry before his death last year, a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation told NBC News on Wednesday.

In May, the Los Angeles Police Department said it was working with the Drug Enforcement Administration and conducting an “open investigation” into the source of Perry’s ketamine following his death at his home on October 28.
The law enforcement source said the federal investigation would continue and no immediate action would be taken in the case. People magazine was the first to report this news.

Perry, 54, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on “Friends,” was found unconscious in his pool, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. The medical examiner’s office said he died from the acute effects of ketamine, combined with the effects of drowning, coronary artery disease and buprenorphine, a synthetic opioid used to treat opioid use disorder.
The medical examiner’s report said the actor was open about his past drug use, but reportedly remained clean for 19 months. According to the coroner, Perry was reportedly receiving ketamine infusion therapy to treat depression and anxiety and his last treatment was a week and a half before his death.

But the coroner said he still had high levels of ketamine, which is used for general anesthesia during surgery, in his system. The coroner said it was unclear why the drug would still remain in his system as it metabolizes within a few hours.

According to a law enforcement source, the investigation is “nearing its conclusion”, with the possibility of charging “multiple people” in connection with Perry’s tragic passing, which was linked to ketamine use.

At some point before his death, Matthew Perry claimed he was sober, but a rehab associate alleged that these claims were far from the truth as he could not tolerate the “tough love” from rehab and was “too All were supporters.

Perry, best known for his fan-favorite role as Chandler Bing on the hit TV show “Friends,” was found face down in the Jacuzzi of his Pacific Palisades, California, home on October 28.

An autopsy report later revealed that the nature of his death was accidental as he died from a ketamine overdose along with other contributing factors including drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine.

According to People magazine, a law enforcement source shared that authorities believe “multiple people” should be charged in the actor’s death as the investigation “nears its conclusion.”

Although no names were released regarding “people” potentially facing charges, the insider said the U.S. Attorney’s Office will decide whether to press charges.
One name that has managed to come up clearly is that of Charlie Sheen’s ex-wife, Brooke Mueller, who has reportedly been questioned more than once about her knowledge of Perry’s sobriety journey.

The pair reportedly formed an “unexpected friendship” during their time spent together in a rehab facility and connected over their Hollywood connections.

A source told In Touch that she is “fully cooperating” with the investigation, which is a joint partnership between the LAPD, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Investigation

The investigation into how Perry came into possession of so much ketamine is involving the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the US Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), the LAPD confirmed on Tuesday.

The DEA previously told The Independent that it “does not confirm or comment on ongoing investigations”. The Independent has also contacted the USPS for comment.
A toxicology report confirmed that his death was caused by “acute effects of ketamine”, which the actor had caused by drowning in hot water. Sources close to the actor said that he was taking ketamine infusion therapy to treat depression and anxiety.

Yet his last infusion therapy was a week and a half before his death. The coroner said the ketamine in Matthew’s system “could not have been from that infusion therapy, because the half-life of ketamine is three to four hours or less.”

His autopsy, released in December, found that the amount of ketamine in his blood was within the range used for general anesthesia during surgery. It was listed as the primary cause of death, which was ruled an accident and no foul play was suspected, the report said.

According to the LA County Medical Examiner’s Office, drowning, coronary artery disease and buprenorphine effects were listed as contributing factors to his death.
According to TMZ, which first reported the news, authorities are looking for a person who may have supplied another source of the drug and whether Perry received the drugs in the mail.

Authorities believe they can assist them in locating Perry’s ketamine dealer. No arrests have been made yet.

Federal postal inspectors will also leverage their tracking software, mail-related investigative tools and industry expertise as part of the investigation. Under USPIS guidelines, first class letters and packages cannot be searched or seized for drugs, as they are protected under the Fourth Amendment and cannot be searched without a warrant.
