The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) announced on Wednesday that defending US Open champion and women’s world No. 2 tennis player Coco Gauff has been named Team USA’s women’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games.
Gauff will join male flag bearer and three-time Olympian LeBron James front and center at Friday’s event, which will be held along the River Seine, marking the first time the ceremony has not taken place inside a stadium.
“I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA at the opening ceremony,” Goff said in a statement.
“I couldn’t be more proud to have LeBron lead my teammates as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage of all – at a moment where we can bring together athletes and fans from around the world. “
Gauff will make her Olympic debut. She was initially set to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Games, but pulled out after testing positive for COVID-19.
The 20-year-old player is the first American tennis player to serve as the flag bearer for Team USA.
Tennis singles and doubles competitions are starting from Saturday at Roland Garros, the home ground of the French Open. Gauff will partner with her partner Jessica Pegula in doubles.
The Parade of Nations – in which national delegations of athletes normally enter the Olympic Stadium on foot – will be held on the water itself, with boats carrying 10,500 athletes from the city centre.
The ceremony will start at 1:30 pm. ET and will be broadcast on NBC.

Tennis star Coco Gauff will join LeBron James as flag bearers for the US Olympic team at Friday’s opening ceremony.
Gauff, the reigning US Open champion, is set to make her Olympic debut at the Paris Games and will be the first tennis athlete to carry the American flag. He and James were selected by Team USA athletes.
“I mean, for me, the Olympics are the top priority. I would say equivalent to a Grand Slam. I wouldn’t put it higher or lower, just because I’ve never played it before. This is my first time,” Gauff said earlier this year. “Obviously, I always want to do well, try to get a medal.”
Gauff and James, the 39-year-old leading scorer in NBA history, both compete in sports outside the traditional Olympic world and attract attention year-round, not just every four years.
