The Dallas Cowboys’ preparations for the 2024 season will begin without at least one key player.

Superstar wideout CeeDee Lamb will not report to training camp on Wednesday because he wants a lucrative long-term contract, according to multiple reports. Lamb and the Cowboys have reportedly discussed an extension but have been unable to find a middle ground so far.

In all likelihood, Lamb wants to match the record-setting four-year, $140 million extension that made Justin Jefferson the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history (based on average salary).

The 25-year-old Lamb was drafted the same year as Jefferson (2020), is the same age and has offered similar production to the Minnesota Vikings superstars so far in their respective careers:

Lamb: Totaled 395 catches for 5,145 yards and 32 touchdowns in 66 games.
Jefferson: Totaled 392 catches for 5,899 yards and 30 touchdowns in 60 games.
The Cowboys can point out that Jefferson has accrued significantly more yardage than Lamb in six fewer games, while the receptions and touchdown totals are nearly identical. Lamb will argue that he deserves to be paid like one of the elite receivers in the game and that Jefferson’s contract resets that market, and his looming free agency provides him with some leverage, given that quarterback Dak Prescott is also entering the final year of his deal and is in the market for a massive extension.
The last thing the Cowboys want next offseason is two star players who could hit the open market and only have a franchise tag to use as a safety net.

And then there’s Micah Parsons and his rising expansion. His rookie deal expires after the 2025 season and he’ll seek a contract comparable to Nick Bosa (five years, $170 million), which resets the market for both edge-rushers and non-quarterbacks.

In other words, the Cowboys could have three players who are in talks to become the highest-paid players at their respective positions in the NFL, and in the case of Lamb and Peay.

Trade

The Vikings received a first-rounder, fourth-rounder, fifth-rounder and a sixth-rounder in exchange for Stefon Diggs, who is entering his sixth year.
This is a very good starting point for trading, so one can expect 2025 1st RD, 2026 4th RD, and 2026 5th RD.

The Patriots likely won’t trade their young receivers Jalin Polk or Demario Douglas, but the Cowboys should definitely bring them into a potential conversation.

While the Cowboys may be making a loss to the 2024-2025 Cowboys, their future will be much more flexible with opening the door for more opportunities to save money for a star receiver as well as keep quarterback Dak Prescott.
