The Philadelphia 76ers continued building around their star trio of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George by adding free-agent forward Caleb Martin, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Saturday.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Martin joined the 76ers on a four-year, $32 million deal.
Martin intends to sign a multi-year contract soon after the league lifts its signing moratorium, said the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet official.

Terms were not available yet.

Martin, 28, averaged 8.5 points over five seasons, including the past three seasons with the Miami Heat. It was at Miami that Martin developed a reputation for elevating his game. He averaged 10 points and shot 35% from 3-point range.

He’ll likely fill the starting spot left open in Philly, where the 76ers have completely revamped their roster after another early exit in the postseason. They spent more than $400 million to lure George away from the Clippers and keep their homegrown All-Star guard Maxi on the team for five more years. Team president Daryl Morey also signed free-agents Andre Drummond and Eric Gordon and re-signed Kelly Oubre Jr.

Martin was not drafted to NC State coming out of college. He entered the NBA with almost no guarantees. He had to play in G League. Charlotte let him go after two seasons.

Now, he must become the starting power forward for a franchise that has not won an NBA title since 1983.

Martin averaged 19.3 points on 60% shooting and scored a playoff-career high 26 points on Boston’s home field in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. He was strong that season, averaging 10.8 points on nearly 53% shooting in the first two rounds against No. 1 Milwaukee and No. 5 New York.

Martin’s postseason numbers were exactly what the 76ers were looking for as they filled out a roster that was missing Embiid and Maxey at the end of the season.

However Martin has continued to raise his level of play in the postseason. His best performance may have come during the Heat’s surprise final run in 2023. He averaged 12.7 points per game in the postseason on 65.7% true shooting. He saved his best performance for the Eastern Conference Finals, where he averaged 19.3 points in seven games against the Boston Celtics. In 28 playoff games over the past two seasons, Martin has averaged 12.5 points per game on 51.8/42.6/85.0 shooting splits.

Aside from his aggression, Martin is an extremely versatile defender. With a height of 6-foot-5 and a 6-foot-10 wingspan, he is capable of guarding one through four. This could be important for the Sixers as the roster currently lacks any real players suitable for the fourth spot. Martin is quite capable of moving forward. With Martin, Paul George and Kelly Oubre, Jr., the Sixers’ potential starting group includes a switchable and talented defensive trio of wings.

As simple as it sounds, Martin is able to dribble, pass, shoot and defend. At times it felt like the Sixers had too many players who were specialists of one kind or another. Martin offers abundant versatility in a game that is becoming increasingly positionless.
