Alexander Zverev booked his place in the 2024 French Open final by defeating Casper Ruud in four sets in the semi-finals on Friday. It is the first time that the German has reached the final at Roland Garros, and he betters his semi-final results in Paris in the last two years.

The win over Casper Ruud wasn’t the only good news Zverev received on Friday night. Hours before the semi-finals, he last week reached an out-of-court settlement with ex-girlfriend Brenda Patia in an ongoing domestic abuse trial in Berlin.
Despite the lawsuit, Zverev said he had not been distracted during the past fortnight at the French Open. In fact, after his win over Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals, the former world No. 2 claimed that the trial was going in the right direction and he was confident of getting a not guilty verdict.
However, it should be noted that the settlement does not mean that Zverev is guilty or innocent in the case in the eyes of the court.
Following his win over Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev will face Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final.

Zverev agreed to pay a fine of 150,000 euros ($162,000) to the state and 50,000 euros ($54,000) to charitable organizations.
World number four Zverev was accused of physically harming Petya during an argument in Berlin in May 2020. Prosecutors alleged he pushed her against a wall and strangled her. Zverev always denied any wrongdoing.
The case came to trial after Zverev contested a penalty order issued last October, which also required him to pay a fine of 450,000 euros ($490,000). Penalty orders are used in Germany as a means of resolving some criminal cases without a trial if the suspect does not resist the order.
Judge Barbara Luders told the court she was dropping the case after Zverev and Petya’s lawyers talked in recent days about ending their disputes, “at all levels at which there were disagreements in recent years.”
The former couple wanted to end their public feud and “look forward,” Luders said, including regarding “joint custody of their child.”
Zverev had hinted ahead of the ongoing French Open.

The settlement between the world number four and his former partner Brenda Patia marks the end of a protracted legal battle, with the Berlin court hearing the case making no official ruling.
Under the terms of the agreement, Zverev will pay €200,000 (£170,000), a court spokesman said, of which €150,000 will go to the state and €50,000 to a fund for charitable organisations.
Prosecutors, the defense team and co-plaintiffs as Patia approved the agreement in the interest of a “peaceful resolution”. There is no need for any admission of guilt on Zverev’s part.
The Berlin court last week began hearing an appeal by Zverev, 27, who failed to appear in court while competing at the French Open in Paris. He was fined €450,000 in October as part of a penalty order for allegedly trying to strangle Petya, a former model and mother of his three-year-old daughter Myla.
The judges heard from the prosecutor how, after “a heated argument” in a rented flat in Berlin in May 2020, Zverev allegedly pushed Patiya against a wall and strangled her with both hands.

The court was told Patiya had difficulty swallowing and breathing and experienced sore throat for several days afterwards.
Zverev’s lead defense lawyer, Alfred Dearlam, dismissed the allegations as “baseless and contradictory”.
His legal team on Friday welcomed the withdrawal of the case by the court. “Alexander Zverev agreed to this settlement in order to bring an early end to the proceedings – in the interests of his child above all else,” he said in a statement. “The agreement does not involve any determination or admission of guilt. The presumption of innocence remains.”
Patiya did not appear in court on Friday.
The trial is scheduled to run through the dates of the Wimbledon Championships and end just before the start of the Paris Olympics.
