BJ Thompson suffers seizure: medical staff provides,Cardiac arrest at team facility
BJ Thompson’s cardiac arrest made headlines Thursday as the Chiefs defensive end seized up during a meeting, forcing the cancellation of practice.
Although the situation is far from how the team and fans had hoped it would turn out in OTAs, there is a silver lining.
Speaking on “Pro Football Talk”, NFL analyst Charen Williams said it was fortunate that if a cardiac arrest were to occur, it was better to have it at the team facility than most places.
Many comparisons to Thompson’s cardiac event have been made with Damon Hamlin’s condition. Hamlin suffered a heart attack during a Monday Night Football game, forcing the game to be canceled. The Buffalo Bills safety made a full recovery and has since returned to the gridiron. One can only hope that Thompson can make a similar recovery.
The Kansas City Chiefs won it all in February for the second year in a row. However, since then, there has been a drastic change of events for the team.
Since winning the Super Bowl, BJ Thompson’s team has lost a vote to fund stadium renovations. They also faced a mass shooting incident at the end of the team’s victory parade. Rashi Rice is also facing felony charges. Of course, this isn’t bad news for the Chiefs.
Travis Kelce has graduated from college and continues to attract positive attention for his relationship with Taylor Swift. By winning the Super Bowl, Kelce also increased his Super Bowl total over brother rival Jason Kelce.
Additionally, BJ Thompson’s team visited the White House, a rare accomplishment for any football team. Patrick Mahomes has managed to stay healthy and focused on the 2024 season, and as long as he remains available and focused, not many will be quick to write off the Chiefs. Will the Kansas City Chiefs return to business as usual after their unconventional offseason.
medical staff provides
A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that Kansas City Chiefs backup B.J. Thompson was taken to the hospital in stable condition Thursday after the defensive lineman experienced a cardiac event during a team meeting.
The person, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the incident, said the team’s trainers and medical staff were able to respond quickly and treat Thompson until paramedics arrived.
The Chiefs planned to end their voluntary offseason workouts on Thursday, but a team spokesperson said practices would be extended to Friday. Only then will head coach Andy Reid and other players talk to journalists.
The 27-year-old Thompson was selected in last year’s draft by Stephen F. Austin was selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round. Thompson’s only game was their regular season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers, when Kansas City had already clinched their playoff spot and the game’s outcome was meaningless. Thompson had two tackles in that game.
Cardiac arrest at team facility
Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman BJ Thompson is “awake and responsive” after suffering a seizure and cardiac arrest in a team meeting.
Thompson, 25, was taken to the hospital after the chiefs’ meeting on Thursday.
“He’s headed in the right direction,” Chiefs vice president of sports medicine and performance Rick said Friday.
“Our players, our security staff, everyone involved, the coaches and staff, they were phenomenal in their handling of the crisis.”
After a medical emergency caused the Chiefs to cancel a scheduled practice session, head coach Andy Reid and players delayed a media session until Friday.
Thompson, selected in the fifth round of last year’s NFL draft, played in one game for the Super Bowl winners last season.
He was part of the Chiefs team that visited the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl title last week.
The Chiefs are currently in their off-season training program and will begin a mandatory mini-camp on Tuesday.
