The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand first reported that Robert Griffin III and Sam Ponder have been let go by the network.

RG3 was removed from his analyst role on “Monday NFL Countdown” this season after the network hired retired Eagles center Jason Kelce.
Before this surprising move, he was also working as a color commentator on ESPN’s college football coverage.

Griffin had been at ESPN for three years and still had two years left on his deal.
A possible quick landing spot for Griffin would be NFL Network’s “Gameday Morning” studio show, as the program still has not hired a replacement for Michael Irvin.

Griffin won the Heisman Trophy at Baylor in 2011 and was the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

He led Washington to first place in the NFC East and won Offensive Rookie of the Year, but his career was never the same after suffering a torn ACL in the wild-card playoff game against the Seahawks.

Griffin and Ponder’s exits have been described as budgetary decisions being made before the fiscal year ends at the end of September.

While both of them still had time left on their contracts, these moves allow ESPN to write off expenses now.

What happened

According to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, NFL analyst Robert Griffin III and “NFL Countdown” host Sam Ponder have been let go by ESPN.

According to Marchand, the moves are budget-related, with the network nearing the end of its fiscal year. He is reportedly the only ESPN talent being released at this time, but more decisions could be made before the end of September.

Griffin, who had two years left on his contract, joined ESPN in 2021 to work on their college football and NFL coverage. He was recently replaced on “Monday Night Countdown” after the network hired the recently retired Jason Kelce.

Griffin did not comment but made reference to it on X using a clip from the film “Friday”.

According to Marchand, Griffin was seen as a candidate to be let go after his stock at ESPN declined. The network will pay the remainder of his salary.

Ponder was hired by ESPN in 2011 as a reporter for college football and basketball broadcasts, as well as the Longhorn Network. He took over as host of “NFL Countdown” in 2017.

Salary

Sources with knowledge of his contract reported that Ponder was entering the final season of a three-year deal worth more than $3 million. She only served in the coveted role of “Sunday NFL Countdown” host and was basically on leave for the rest of the year.

Husband

Ponder is a Christian. After dating for some time, she married then-Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder on December 17, 2012, in Hudson, Wisconsin. She began appearing on ESPN/ABC broadcasts under her married name, beginning with the January 1, 2013 broadcast of the CapitalOne Bowl. The couple have three children.

Barstool

If you’re expecting Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy to pop a champagne bottle upon the news that Sam Ponder has been fired from ESPN, think again.

Sports media personalities took to social media to react to the news that Ponder and former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III were let go by Worldwide Leaders, but surprised many by not basing the decision on ESPN.

The 47-year-old Portnoy made a show of opening a champagne bottle when the person he feels insulted him gets fired from his job, but despite previous bad blood between Portnoy and Ponder, this time He didn’t do that.

The Barstool Sports founder previously blamed Ponder in part for the cancellation of ESPN’s “Barstool Van Talk” after just one episode.
“Everyone’s saying, ‘Prez, where’s the bottle of Sam Ponder?'” Portnoy said in the nearly 1:35-long video posted to X from his Montauk home. “No Sam Ponder Bottle, can you believe it? Listen, I took the first shot at Sam Ponder. Was it a joke? Yes. Do I think he and ESPN overreacted? I know so. But I am fair. And I have said this about Ponder, buried the axe, buried the axe. I don’t have any champagne bottles for him.”

He later continued: “Sam Ponder, no complaints. I said some things, she stuck to them, she played her card, I have no complaints about that. This is when people come out of left field and start fighting with me, and they come at me first. Ponder is not one of them. So, best wishes to him for his next steps.

He said he opened a bottle seven years ago after former ESPN chief John Skipper stepped down.

Ponder, 38, was the victim of nasty comments from Barstool early in her career, and she came under fire in 2017 after ESPN agreed to a “Barstool Van Talk” and posted about some of the things written about her.
