Ronny Deila announces new head coach: Celtic signings,Standard Liege
Atlanta United has found its new head coach after Gonzalo Pineda was fired during the 2024 season.
The Five Stripes have hired former NYCFC boss Ronny Deila, the club announced Friday.
Delilah won the MLS Cup with the Bronx club in 2021 before leaving the club for Belgian outfit Standard Liège. From Liège, Deila climbed the ladder in Belgium to take over as Club Brugge boss, but departed just before the Championship playoffs in the 2023/24 campaign.
“We are thrilled to welcome Ronny as the new head coach of Atlanta United,” said club President and CEO Garth Lagerwey.
“He has a proven track record of victories in multiple leagues around the world, including the 2021 MLS Cup with NYCFC, and his knowledge of MLS was a key factor in our search.
“We believe his style of play is in line with the club’s philosophy as we look to build a team that will consistently compete for trophies.”
Atlanta largely underperformed in the regular season in the 2024 campaign, but managed to make it to the MLS Cup playoffs after coming into the season with huge expectations.
Deila will be tasked with taking the club back to where they feel they belong in the Eastern Conference – fighting at the top.
When Vitor Pereira was asked to describe himself during his first Wolves press conference he replied, “I’m just Vitor.”
There were no bold declarations of being special like Jose Mourinho and no guarantees of survival for the 56-year-old.
But the will to succeed is there and he is confident in his ability after waiting 14 years to realize his dream of working in the Premier League.
His press conference lasted for 46 minutes. There were a number of topics ranging from how he wants to play, how long it might take for his Wolves identity to materialise, the transfer window, the team’s recent indiscipline and his varied club history.
Pereira apologized before and after the press conference for his English – which was excellent – and!
Celtic signings
Atlanta United has completed its coaching search with the announcement that Ronny Deila will take over the reins, the club confirmed on Friday.
The 49-year-old Norwegian brings an impressive resume, having won two league titles and a Scottish League Cup in the Scottish Premier League, and most notably winning the 2021 MLS Cup with New York City FC. His latest venture was a brief stint with Al Wahda FC in the UAE Pro League.
In recent weeks, Atlanta CEO Garth Lagarve has emphasized the need for a coach with a proven history of success. Deila stepped in to replace interim manager Rob Valentino, who led Atlanta to a late playoff appearance, leading the team to a win over Inter Miami before losing to Orlando City in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
“We are excited to welcome Ronny as the new head coach of Atlanta United,” Lagerwey said in a statement. “His track record of achievements in various leagues, particularly the 2021 MLS Cup with NYCFC, was important in our pursuit. His style of play is in line with the club’s philosophy as we seek to build a competitive team that will consistently challenge for trophies.” Be able to give.”
Deila is known for his penchant for attacking football. While his NYCFC team scored a moderate number of 56 goals in 2021, his identity leaned toward flexibility rather than flair. However, he has never shied away from letting creative players shine. His work is credited with the development of former NYCFC striker Taty Castellanos and several promising academy talents.
In Atlanta, Deila will face a familiar scenario, much like his time in New York, as the team relies heavily on foreign signings.
“This club boasts strong ownership, top-notch facilities and the ambition to achieve excellence while moving up the league,” Deila told Atlanta’s internal media. “I am thrilled to return to a competitive league that I deeply admire, and I look forward to joining in and collaborating with our player group.
