Mark Kelly is married to former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz.

They met on a U.S.-China trade mission in 2003 and married in 2007.

At the time of their marriage, Kelly was still an astronaut and Tucson native Giffords, a state legislator, was a freshman in Congress.
On January 8, 2011, he was shot in the head by a man suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at a constituent event near Tucson. Six people died and 12 others were injured in addition to Giffords.

Subsequently, Kelly and Giffords created an organization, now called Giffords, which advocates for what they describe as common sense gun regulations.

Before his career in politics, Kelly emerged as a national spokesperson on the issue for several years. Giffords resigned her seat in Congress in 2012.

Kelly’s first marriage ended in divorce after 15 years. He has two adult daughters.

As Democrats nationally are reconsidering whether to re-nominate President Joe Biden for a second term, one name on the ticket as a possible replacement is US Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona.

For her part, Kelly has repeatedly called on voters to stick with Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
“The goal here is to re-elect President Biden,” he told Roll Call earlier this month. “From what I can tell you from my personal experience with public polling, it’s not entirely accurate.” On Friday he again urged support for the Biden-Harris ticket in a social media post.

He has been in the Senate since the 2020 elections and is a man whose life story has many elements that would make up most of most people’s biographies. He was a Navy fighter pilot. He was an astronaut. His twin brother Scott was also like this. His wife narrowly escaped being shot in the head. He is the author of several books and one of the wealthiest members of the Senate.

Education

Kelly received a bachelor’s degree with highest honors in marine engineering and marine science from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He received a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the US Naval Postgraduate School.

He was a Navy fighter pilot and was deployed aboard the USS Midway during Operation Desert Storm, where he flew 39 missions.

During his military career, Kelly received numerous medals, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and several Air Medals. He retired as a captain.
