In the aftermath of losing the Men’s College World Series to Tennessee on Monday, Texas A&M baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle was adamant that he would “never” leave the program for another job.

On Tuesday, Schlossnagle agreed to leave Texas A&M to take over the baseball program at Texas. Schlossnagle and the Longhorns confirmed the news Tuesday night, following multiple reports.
In three seasons in College Station, Schlossnagle led the Aggies to three NCAA tournament appearances and two trips to the College World Series. Texas A&M fell one win short of a national title in the best-of-three championship series this week.

Here’s Schlossnagle when asked about the proposition of leaving Texas A&M after losing the winner-take-all Game 3 on Monday:
Schlossnagle apparently has given the last ounce he’s ever going to give to Texas A&M. Less than 24 hours after that statement, he’s headed to Austin.
Schlossnagle leaves for the rival Longhorns as one of the most decorated coaches in college baseball. He takes over a powerhouse Texas program with 38 College World Series appearances, 12 trips to the CWS finals and six national championships.

A two-time National Coach of the Year, Schlossnagle has coached 22 years of NCAA baseball with previous stops at TCU and UNLV. He has led his teams to 19 total NCAA tournament appearances, including seven trips to the College World Series.

He has yet to win a national championship. If he does, it won’t happen with Texas A&M. The Longhorns and Aggies will face off as SEC rivals starting next season.

Salary

He is currently slated to make $1.35 million per season and is under contract with the Texas A&M Aggies until after the 2029 season.
There are ties between Schlossnagle and Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte. The two worked together in the same roles from 2009-17 with the TCU Horned Frogs. But what does Jim Schlossnagle’s contract look like and is there a possibility he could leave Texas A&M to coach the Texas Longhorns for the 2025 college baseball season?
According to GigEm247’s open records request, Texas A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle made $1.35 million as a base salary in 2024 during his third season with the Aggies. However, there is an interesting clause about him taking another job while under contract.
His current contract is set to expire on June 30, 2029, meaning he has another five years remaining on his current deal. However, if Schlossnagle were to leave for another college baseball program in the state of Texas, his buyout would be twice his annual salary. That means if the Longhorns want to sign Jim Schlossnagle and he were to agree to leave Texas A&M, it would trigger a $2.7 million buyout.

The Texas A&M Aggies dropped the decisive Game 3 of the College World Series on Monday night to Tennessee, 6-5.

It was the Vols’ first-ever baseball title, and after the game, Aggies head coach Jim Schlossnagle said he went to College Station “to never take another job again.”

Schlossnagle was asked about the rumors of a “specific job opening” after the loss, and he even challenged the reporter, saying it was “selfish” of him to ask about it.
“I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again, and that hasn’t changed in my mind. That’s unfair to talk about something like that…” Schlossnagle said. “I understand you gotta ask the question, but I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job, and I’ve poured every ounce of my soul in this job, and I’ve given this job every single ounce I can possibly give it. Write that.”

Well, less than 24 hours after that sentiment, 247 Sports and ESPN reported that Schlossnagle was, in fact, taking another job.
However, the report isn’t just any job, but rather the school’s in-state rival, the Texas Longhorns.

Texas announced the move was official on Tuesday night.
Of course, the stern answer from Monday night is now going viral, understandably so.
“The first thing Jim Schlossnagle should do is call the TexAgs reporter, Richard Zane, and apologize for insulting him about his question about the Longhorns’ job after the defeat. Schlossnagle will never have any credibility again except in Austin,” NFL reporter John McClain wrote on X.
“After his postgame performance in which he berated a reporter for asking him a question that had to be asked, if Jim Schlossnagle leaves the Aggies for the Longhorns, he’ll have no credibility for the rest of his career and will be branded as a liar by many.”

Sports Grid host Ben Stevens said that “there is no greater lie told than a college coach when asked about a job opening.”

Jim Schlossnagle, who had been a stabilizing force in the Texas A&M baseball team and made a major career change when he accepted an appointment at the University of Texas at Austin. The decision was more than an actual shift of 100 miles to the west, but also a metaphorical break from his status being an Aggie. Schlossnagle’s departure in 2021 demonstrates the expectations and pressures placed on college coaches in major programs. His time as a coach at Texas A&M was marked by excellent performances and a dedication to excellence. However, the enticement of a fresh competition in Austin as well as better opportunities and resources led to his departure.

What Led to the Other Coaches’ Departures?

Billy Kennedy and Rob Childress as basketball and baseball, respectively, have also quit their jobs as coaches at Texas A&M. Kennedy, after a turbulent period that included an Sweet 16 appearance, was removed in 2019 because of inconsistency in team performance and failure to reach the higher expectations of the team. Childress was, on the contrary on the other hand, didn’t have his contract renewed until 2021, despite a solid track record, signalling that the university is looking for an overhaul to win the long-awaited College World Series title.
