Harrison Burton won NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona: Wife,100th win
Daytona offered drama on Saturday night as Harrison Burton defeated Kyle Busch in the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford to clinch his spot in the 2024 playoffs.
Parker Retzlaff edged fellow Chevrolet driver Burton ahead of Busch in the final. Burton then blocked aggressively, crossed the finish line and ultimately became the winner in the NASCAR Cup Series after 98 career starts. And he did it all with his father and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Burton in the booth.
The Wood Brothers are parting ways with Burton at the conclusion of the 2024 season. The 23-year-old was very emotional in his interview after the race as his future in the sport is still unknown.
“I don’t know! I cried the whole victory lap,” said a dejected Burton. “Obviously I was fired from this job. I wanted to do everything I could for the Wood Brothers. They’ve given me an amazing opportunity in life. To get them 100 (wins) while I’m gone. ..It’s amazing. We’re in the playoffs now!”
He then added: “It’s amazing. It’s been the hardest three years of my life. Obviously the hardest three years of some of these guys’ lives. The way we just won, Winning from, beating the best in the business, Kyle Busch.” This line is amazing.”
The Wood brothers, who have competed in NASCAR since 1953 but have not visited Victory Lane since Pocono in 2017.
Busch finished second, Christopher Bell finished third, Cody Ware finished fourth and Ty Gibbs finished fifth. Bubba Wallace, Parker Retzlaff, Brad Keselowski, Daniel Hemric and Chris Buescher rounded out the top ten.
This win has completely changed the playoff picture, with Bubba Wallace down 21 points and Ross Chastain down 27 points, with Chris Buescher now in 16th and last place.
The race featured 40 lead changes among 16 drivers, but was also slowed by seven cautions and one red flag stop. Both stage winners [Berry and Joey Logano] failed to finish the race after crashing.
The final laps of the race were nothing short of pure chaos.

100th win
Here’s what the drivers had to say after Saturday night’s NASCAR Cup race at Daytona International Speedway.
Harrison Burton – Winner: “I cried the entire victory lap. Obviously fired up from this job. I wanted to do everything I could for the Wood Brothers. They’ve given me an amazing opportunity in life It’s amazing to get 100 runs.
Let’s go to Darlington and see what happens. It’s been the hardest three years of my life, obviously. It’s been the toughest three years of life. The way we’ve just won, beating the best in the business, Kyle Busch, is awesome.
Kyle Busch – Finished second: “It’s very disappointing. We’ve led the race here at Daytona until the last restart and haven’t been able to get the win. Not sure what it is; What am I doing wrong or what am I missing? It seemed like the energy in Turn 2 broke and the No. 20 (Christopher Bell) went sideways and wasn’t on my back bumper the way we should have been. Just passed the street outside.
I wanted to line up in front of No. 21 (Harrison Burton) because I knew that’s where the pace was coming from. But I knew that number 20 was a better friend. “It just couldn’t work.”
Christopher Bell – finished third: “I’m frustrated about it – you want to push the leader out and give yourself a chance to win. I never really felt in control. I’ve always been in trouble with my Interstate Batteries Camry. Was chasing – so I was never confident about getting behind 8 (Kyle Busch) and pushing him, but overall, a good day in one of those races.
One where we’ll be happy when we look back – but right now it’s hurting.”
Ty Gibbs – Finished 5th: “I’m glad we finished this race. It got a little messy at the end, which happens at all these races. I was just happy to have a nice, clean day – Good marks day.
Bubba Wallace – sixth place: “Not good enough. So much!
