There seemed to be a slight lead heading into Game 5 at Madison Square Garden.
Early in the second quarter, things became tense between the Knicks and Pacers when Donte DiVincenzo drew an offensive foul from Indiana’s Isaiah Jackson.
Less than a minute into the second, the Pacers’ T.J. McConnell was preparing for a play when Jackson tried to set a screen, sending DiVincenzo high enough to knock him to the floor.
Isaiah Hartenstein objected to Jackson – who was called for an illegal pick – and immediately confronted him.
Hartenstein, while teammate Alec Burks tried to intervene, put his hands on Jackson’s beard and neck and attempted to push him away before officials separated the two teams.
After all was said and done, Hartenstein, Burke and Jackson were all given technical fouls, giving Indiana a free throw.
This happened when DiVincenzo faced McConnell in the first quarter when McConnell drew an offensive foul on an unnatural basketball movement.
And late in the third quarter DiVincenzo found himself in the middle of a more playful game when he and Myles Turner had to separate and the two began staring at each other.
Both were issued technicals, but the Garden crowd was shocked as Knicks fans loudly chanted DiVincenzo’s name after the kerfuffle.
Triggers startling fight
The New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers rivalry seems alive and well. During the Knicks’ blowout Game 5 win on Tuesday, things got a little messy between Donte DiVincenzo and Myles Turner.
DiVincenzo had a put-back dunk that put the Knicks up 22 points in the third quarter. As the crowd at Madison Square Garden was celebrating, he walked to the opposite side of the court and ran in front of the screen set up by Turner. They soon got involved but quickly separated due to emotions being at their peak. Both DiVincenzo and Turner suffered technical fouls for the dust-up.
When asked about the incident after the game, DiVincenzo made some interesting comments about the Pacers’ attitude.
“They’re trying to be tough guys. And that’s not their identity and nothing more than that,” DiVincenzo told reporters in the locker room. “I don’t agree with trying to one-up anyone. Nobody’s going to fight in the NBA. So foul, keep it up. You’re not a tough guy.”
DiVincenzo himself did not have the best shooting night as he finished with eight points while shooting 4 of 14 from the field. However, he contributed seven rebounds, four assists and a game-high three steals.
Jalen Brunson was the star of the night as he led the Knicks with 44 points – marking his fifth time reaching 40 points in these playoffs. Josh Hart and Alec Burks contributed 18 points each, while Miles McBride added 17 more points. Burke had a solid performance coming off the bench as he went 5 of 8 from beyond the arc.
While they found themselves on the wrong side of a blowout during Game 4, the Knicks bounced back and now lead their second-round series 3-2. They need just one more win to punch a ticket to their first Eastern Conference Finals since 2000.
