Aaron Judge had never been evicted in his life. Never in his nine-year MLB career. Never spent any time in his three seasons in the minor leagues. Never in his three years at Fresno State. Never in my four years at Linden High. And never in Little League. But eight words were enough for the judge as he walked away from home-plate umpire Ryan Blackney.

Once Blakeney threw Judge out of the game – TV replays and field microphones showed Judge saying, “That’s bulls—t, you’ve been bulls—the whole game” – the center fielder got his money’s worth. Came back for, though still in somewhat measured logic.

Manager Aaron Boone came out of the dugout to defend Judge and at times restrained him during the back-and-forth with Blackney.

“Very surprised,” Judge said after the Yankees’ 5-3 win over the Tigers. “Especially a 5-3 game, at the end of the game, fighting a 3-2 count, calling your shots and walking away.

“I said very bad things. I usually try not to create a scene in such situations. Very little surprise when this happened.”

Calling for slower strikes against the 6-foot-7 slugger is nothing new – though it was a 3-2 fastball that probably just barely clipped the outside edge of the zone – but he’s rarely been more outspoken to umpires. Shows disappointment.

Boone and Anthony Rizzo both cited the judge’s reputation, saying the judge should not have been disgraced so quickly.

“Judges usually say very little, very respectfully, as they walk away,” Boone said. “Come. Come on, dear.”

“You know these guys, you know the umpires and what you can and can’t say,” Rizzo said. “As much as we get animated because we’re competing and want to be great, there’s a line you get to and if you cross it, it guarantees elimination. I don’t think Aaron has reached that point.”

Aaron Judge’s first career ejection happened so quickly that he didn’t even notice it.

Judge was ejected for the first time in his career when he briefly argued over a third strike called by plate umpire Ryan Blackney in the seventh inning of the Yankees’ 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

With one out, Judge took a full count fastball from Tyler Holton that he felt was a little out. Blackney called him and the judge looked back briefly.

After beginning to walk back to the dugout, the judges returned to debate the call after being tossed by Blackney. Manager Aaron Boone came out of the dugout to discuss the ejection with Blackney and he was not tossed.

“I don’t even see myself being upset,” the judge said. “It was kind of a crowd reaction. “I kind of had an idea at that point.”

Boone said he was very surprised.

“The judge, he says very little and usually leaves very respectfully,” Boone said. “Come.”
Unlike plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt’s ejection of Boone on April 22, there was no clear audio on the Yes Network of the exchange.

Crew chief Alan Porter, who was the third-base umpire, spoke to a pool reporter and did not know exactly what was said by the judge, who declined to disclose what was said.
“Obviously Aaron didn’t agree with the pitch and he said something you shouldn’t have said and he was ejected,” Porter said. “We do what we can to keep people in the game but he said something he shouldn’t have said.”

Since Derek Jeter had never been thrown out in his 20-year career, Judge became the first Yankee captain since Don Mattingly in Milwaukee on May 13, 1994, to be thrown out.

“I have a lot of respect for Ryan and what he does,” Judge said. “I know they have a tough job. I have always supported him because it is hard to get back there. So for it to happen like that, that’s what I’m most upset about, especially late in the game like that.

Thrown out

Blackney was not made available to a pool reporter, but crew chief Alan Porter (who said Blackney had not told him what the judge said) indicated that the judge had crossed the line.
Obviously Aaron didn’t agree with the pitch and he said something you shouldn’t have said and he was ejected,” Porter said. “We do what we can to keep people in the game but he said something he shouldn’t have said.”

Judge said he had “great respect” for the work of Blackney and the umpires, but was troubled by the manner in which the ejection occurred – as he was walking back to the dugout – and late in a close game.

“It’s the heat of the moment, 3-2 count, I think it’s a ball, disagree with the call,” the judge said. “Say what you want, but get back in the dugout and get the game going. So to go away and face the dugout and get tossed – I didn’t even see myself getting tossed.

“I think what I heard was the crowd’s reaction, so I assumed it at that point.”
