Three-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur made her comeback ahead of the Australian Open by defeating fourth seed Danielle Collins 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 at the Adelaide International on Tuesday.
The 40th-ranked Tunisian wildcard, who reached the Brisbane quarter-finals last week, suffered a shoulder injury last year that kept her off the court since August.
Collins, the 2022 Australian Open runner-up, who canceled a scheduled retirement at the end of 2024, was playing her first WTA match since September.
Jabeur faced Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in the last 16 and said she relied on her forehand to win.
“It saved me a lot, it was a really good match for me,” she said.
“After getting injured I was not expected to win many matches, but the rest time helped me physically and mentally. I was a little tired from the tennis years.”
Defending champion Jelena Ostapenko needed a set to advance, but the intensity increased in a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Magdalena Frech.
The 17th-ranked Latvian, who won Roland GarrosRoland Garros in 2017, will face Madison Keys in the last 16 in the first major warm-up tournament of the year.
American Keys defeated Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-2, 6-1, who is four places higher than her at world number 16.
