Little League International announced Friday that former first-round MLB draft pick and two-time Little League World Series champion with Long Beach (Calif.) Sean Burroughs died Thursday while coaching his son’s Little League game . He was 43 years old.
The cause of death was not immediately made available.
“I have had the pleasure of coaching with Shawn for the past two years and he always came with a fun and friendly attitude that kids were attracted to, a knowledge of baseball that could get any kid out of a batting rhythm And there was humility worth emulating. “To say this is a huge loss is an understatement,” Long Beach Little League President Doug Wittman said in a statement.
Sean Burroughs, son of 1974 AL MVP Jeff Burroughs, starred on the Little League World Series stage for the first time. He helped Long Beach become the first American League team to win consecutive LLWS titles in 1992 and 1993. During Long Beach’s 1993 title run, Burroughs made LLWS history as the first American player to throw back-to-back no-hitters and he posted a . Also a .600 batting average at the plate.
The San Diego Padres selected Burroughs out of Woodrow Wilson High School (Long Beach, California) with the ninth overall selection in the 1998 MLB draft. The third baseman first reached the majors in 2002, when he hit a walk-off single in the first regular season game played at Petco Park in San Diego. Burroughs spent four seasons with the Padres, hitting .282/.340/.360 in 432 games.

Burroughs played a total of seven seasons in the majors, suiting up for the Padres (2002–05), Tampa Bay Rays (2006), Arizona Diamondbacks (2011) and Minnesota Twins (2012). Burrows, who also spent time in the Seattle Mariners (2007) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2013) organizations, was out of baseball for four years.

California’s Long Beach Little League confirmed Burroughs’ death, saying in a social media post that he “tragically passed away” on Thursday. Burroughs’ mother, Debbie, told the Southern California News Group that her son had gone into cardiac arrest.
Burroughs’ Long Beach team won two Little League World Series championships. He played for four major league teams and won an Olympic gold medal in 2000.
“We at USA Baseball are saddened to hear of Shawn’s tragic passing,” USA Baseball CEO Paul Seiler said in a statement.

Long Beach Little League President Doug Wittman said Burroughs was found unconscious near his car shortly after dropping his son Knox off at a Little League baseball game. Efforts to revive Burroughs were unsuccessful.
“It was very shocking,” Wittman told The Orange County Register. “It’s a real feeling of family at Long Beach Little League. So, when we lose one of our own, it hurts.”
“Sean was a legend in the LBLL and baseball community for winning consecutive Little League World Series championships for the LBLL in 1992 and 1993,” Long Beach Little League wrote in an Instagram post. “To say this is a tremendous loss would be an understatement. …His family will be in our thoughts and prayers during this time and we will strive to finish the season playing the kind of baseball that Coach Shawn would be proud of.”
Burroughs followed in the footsteps of his father Jeff Burroughs. The elder Burroughs was named American League MVP in 1974.
Burroughs spent the first four seasons of his big league career with the San Diego Padres. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in late 2005. After appearing in eight games with the Rays

He made 528 MLB appearances, hitting .278/.335/.355 with 12 home runs and 143 RBI. Burroughs was also part of Team USA’s gold medal-winning team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
