More than 10,000 athletes will sail across the Seine on Friday in what will be the most ambitious Olympic opening ceremony ever.
The 2024 Olympics, which begin this week in Paris, aim to “revolutionize” the Games, yet still make them accessible to a wide audience.
To celebrate the official start of the Olympics, which were last held in Paris exactly a century ago, organizers have spent years putting together a dynamic, and distinctly French, event.

More than a billion people from around the world are expected to attend. Here’s everything to know about the ceremony, which, if it goes as planned, will go down in Olympic history.
The live NBC broadcast begins with a pre-show at noon ET on Friday, and the ceremony begins at 7:30 p.m. Paris time, or 1:30 PM ET.
The prime-time encore telecast, which includes additional content, will air for American viewers later in the day at 7:30 p.m. ET. The ceremony is expected to last more than four hours.
NBC will have 40 cameras capturing the events in Paris, and live coverage will begin at noon ET. The ceremony will be televised and streamed in digital formats on NBC, Peacock and NBC Olympics. (NBC News shares a parent company, NBCUniversal, with those entities).
At the beginning of the ceremony, the French flag will be hoisted and the French national anthem will be played.
Next comes what is probably the highlight of the ceremony: the Parade of Nations. Athletes representing 206 nations will make their formal entry into the Games. Historically, this involves marching on foot to the stadium, but this year, athletes will proceed by boat along the Seine River, Paris’ “main artery.”
Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the opening ceremony, told the Associated Press, “The opening ceremony has never been held outside the stadium. It has no model; it is a complete creation.”
Each national delegation will ride in a boat equipped with cameras that enables wide access to spectators.
Pacific time
The ceremony will start at the Austerlitz Bridge and travel 4 miles down the river to land at the Trocadero near the Eiffel Tower. Along the way, athletes will pass the city’s most prominent symbols, including the Louvre and Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral.
The Olympic torch will be lit at the end of the route. French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to speak.
Several potential obstacles, such as safety and pollution concerns, threaten to hamper the grand opening ceremony. However, officials say they are “very much prepared” as they make their final preparations.
NBC’s Mike Tirico will host the ceremony for the fourth time, along with three-time Grammy-winning singer Kelly Clarkson and NFL Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.
NBC’s “Today” hosts Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb will watch an aerial view of the ceremony from a bridge over the Seine. NBC Sports commentator Maria Taylor will also be part of the hosting effort.
Official musical performers have not been confirmed, but Celine Dion and Lady Gaga have both arrived in Paris, sparking speculation that they may headline.
French newspaper Le Parisien reported that Dion, who is Québécois and often sings in French, is rumored to be performing “L’Hymne à l’Amour” by Edith Piaf, one of France’s most famous composers. . This will be Dion’s first live performance since being diagnosed with Stiff-Person Syndrome in 2022.

Although exact figures are still not known, on October 17, 1961, more than 100 Algerian protesters were killed and 12,000 were arrested by French police as they demonstrated in support of Algeria’s independence from France. Protestors were thrown into the Seine River by police during the incident, which is often described as a massacre.
French President Emmanuel Macron became the first president in the country’s history to recognize “the crimes committed that night”, which he called “unforgivable” as he laid flowers on a bridge over the river to mark the 60th anniversary of the demonstrations in 2021.
The French–Algerian War, which lasted almost eight years, ended in 1962. Algeria has been independent ever since.
Algeria sent 45 athletes to this summer’s Games, which officially opened during a rainy opening ceremony in Paris on Friday night. Saturday is the first full day of competition.
