Women’s rugby Olympics 2024 schedule: Bracket,Standings
The United States women’s rugby sevens team has won a historic bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Americans scored as time expired to defeat Australia, 14–12. It is the first women’s rugby medal for USA Rugby in Olympic history.
The first half was tough. Both teams scored a try and a conversion, their defense displayed strength which saw them take first place in this bronze medal match.
There was more scoring in the second half, after which the Australian team started to weaken. He started by missing an easy effort, keeping the score level as the clock ticked down to the seven-minute mark. Australia managed to make enough attempts to test Team USA’s defense, but missed the conversion. This cost him two points and he soon regretted it.
The death blow came in the last 15 seconds. Australia kicked it deep after a missed conversion, and initially it looked like it was over. The US were an astonishing 85 meters away from their own goal and time was running out.
But then Alex Cedric caught the ball and found an opening on the solid green in front of her, and she went for it. She was still running when time expired, but like American football, if a play is in motion when the clock expires, the play must run its course before the clock runs out. Points were counted.
Who knows what would have happened had the kick not been good. The game would have gone into sudden death and it was possible that the US would not have won.
But the kick was good. It was successful and the American women won their first medal of any kind in rugby. With their breakout success and the incredible attention they have received, this win could change USA women’s rugby forever.
Bracket
Alex Cedric ran the length of the field to give the U.S. women their first Olympic rugby sevens medal with a stunning stoppage-time comeback win over Australia in the bronze medal match on Tuesday.
The 2016 champion Australians were leading 12–7 in the American zone with seconds remaining. The ball went to Cedric and he dodged two tacklers before running down the other end and scoring, bringing joy to the Americans.
The U.S. women reached the Olympic semifinals for the first time, losing to defending champions New Zealand. This made the third playoff a matter of winning a medal or going home without one.
The Americans ran onto the field to celebrate the 14–12 victory. Sammy Sullivan had tears in his eyes. Ilona Maher raised both her hands in triumph. Olympian Maher has become a sensation on and off the field. Known for her broad shoulders and powerful body and her active social media presence – with 1.8 million followers on TikTok – she has worked to attract a new generation of fans to rugby.
Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” Shouted over the stadium speakers.
The US women had to wait until the final between New Zealand and Canada to take their place on the podium.
Team USA’s blowout loss to Australia did not disappoint and Maher may get the fan base the sport is hoping for.
“I know it’s changing these girls’ lives too because they heard about rugby from a girl on TikTok,” he told “CBS Mornings.” “So they decided to try this club program and then they met their best friends there and now, you know, they’re playing around, coming back with the best memories. So, um, I’m honored. And I hope to continue to expose America to rugby.”
