Team USA men’s basketball may have thought Saturday’s showdown against South Sudan would be a relatively easy task, but it had to make a big comeback in its final practice before the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Team USA fell behind by 16 points, but staged a spectacular comeback in the third quarter for a 101–100 win over a South Sudan team that fielded just one current NBA player.
LeBron James led Team USA with 23 points, leading the comeback by evoking some emotion and finishing several plays with statement dunks. Anthony Davis finished with a double-double off the bench, scoring 15 points and adding 11 rebounds.
Still, the story of the game may have been on the losing side. South Sudan got a triple-double from Carlick Jones, whose stat line included 15 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Former Philadelphia 76ers draft pick Marcial Shayok led all scorers with 25 points, making 6 of 12 from three-point range.
It was a much tougher game than expected, especially after Team USA’s pre-Olympic performance schedule did not include several close calls. Coach Steve Kerr’s team posted an 86-72 win over Canada last week and defeated Australia 98-92 late Monday night. Recently, Team USA recorded a 105-79 win over a Serbia team featuring three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.

South Sudan was one possession away from a historic upset, but Team USA managed to escape the Olympic exhibition game in London 101–100.
The United States went into its fourth pre-Olympic showcase game without much of a challenge from its opponents. Powerful teams like Canada, Australia, and Serbia struggled, but Team USA never felt in danger of losing.
This was far from the case in South Sudan on Saturday.
South Sudan looked fearless against their future Paris Olympics group stage opponent. Its defense was sharp, its ball movement was fast, and everything was falling from 3-point range. South Sudan point guard Carlik Jones recorded a triple-double of 15 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds, while former University of Virginia standout Marial Shayok scored 25 points with six 3-pointers.
South Sudan’s efforts were almost enough for a miracle, but LeBron James had other plans.
The star forward called his number with the game on the line, and drove to the basket himself to go ahead with eight seconds to play. He finished with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists to lead Team USA, showing once again that his talent is timeless.

Team USA got the stop it needed to win the game. Carlick Jones got a great look on the floater but Anthony Davis challenged the shot. Wenyen Gabriel had a chance to play the hero after snagging an offensive rebound but Derrick White and Anthony Edwards turned the ball loose. The United States survived.
Roster
LeBron James saved America from a shocking loss.
James’ layup with 8 seconds remaining went ahead Saturday, and the U.S. Olympic team, which will soon head to the Paris Games, escaped with a 101-100 victory over South Sudan in London, overcoming a 16-point deficit. Went. Avoid perhaps the biggest upset in the program’s history.
South Sudan, the African nation that gained its independence just 13 years ago and is playing in the Olympics for the first time, led for more than half the game and finally had a chance to win. But Carlick Jones’ runner with about 4 seconds left missed the glass and the Americans survived.
“I’ll be honest: I like them better than blowouts,” James said as he walked off the court. “At least we’ll be tested.”
Oh, they were tested — according to BetMGM Sportsbook, by a team that came into the game as a 43.5-point underdog.
“A good reminder that when we play against teams, it’s the biggest game of their lives,” U.S. coach Steve Kerr said. “We have to expect everyone to play like this.”
Trailing by 16 at one point, the Americans climbed out of that hole with an 18-0 run in the second half — yet heroics were needed in the end. JT Thor’s 3-pointer gave South Sudan a 100–99 lead with 20 seconds remaining, then the Americans called timeout and put the ball in James’ hands.
He made it look easy: He waited, waited, waited, then eased into it to put America back on top, and finally the Americans got the stop they needed.
James finished with 25 points, six rebounds and six assists for the U.S., which improved to 4-0 on its pre-Olympic exhibition tour — Monday versus World Cup champion Germany — with one game remaining. Anthony Davis added 15 points for the Americans.
Marial Shayok led all scorers for South Sudan with 25 points and Jones had a triple-double – 15 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
The teams will meet in group play at the Paris Olympics on July 31.
