Contract $212 million

Tagovailoa’s new deal is for four years, worth a total of $212 million. His average annual salary is $53.1 million. He received a $42 million signing bonus and $93.171 million guaranteed upon signing. Tagovailoa’s total guaranteed money is $167.171 million.

With that contract structure, the Dolphins are only absorbing a cap hit of $9.525 million for 2024, before it increases significantly over the next four seasons through 2028.

Tua Tagovailoa stayed healthy enough in the 2023 NFL season that he started every game for the Dolphins. His reward was a long-term extension in the 2024 offseason and he was being paid on par with the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks.
Patrick Mahomes (10 years) and Josh Allen (6 years) received unusual QB contracts in terms of length. Most of the recently extended QBs, including Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence and Justin Herbert, received five-year deals.

But Tagovailoa along with three QBs – Dak Prescott, Jordan Love and Jared Goff – were able to reduce the length of their next contracts to four years. Teams try to secure a player for five years long term, but most prefer to take fewer years before reaching the top of the QB market again.

With this, Tagovailoa received less than $200 million in guaranteed money as well as a lower overall contract value. However, if he steps up his game he has more flexibility to break the bank earlier.

Tagovailoa led the league in passing yards (4,624) while playing in all 17 games last season. In his first season under offensive-minded coach Mike McDaniels in 2022, Tagovailoa led all QBs in yards per attempt (8.9) and passer rating (105.5).

With stats like that and major chemistry with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, big-play wide receivers in McDaniels’ system, keeping Tagovailoa as the franchise QB for a while was an easy choice, especially when the team was also 11- 6 and make the playoffs again.

Tagovailoa was one of several top QBs who got paid on new contracts this summer, and the Dolphins also.

Brain injuries typically worsen over time, and this wasn’t Tua Tagovailoa’s last injury of the 2022 season. Ten weeks after returning, Tua suffered another head injury on Christmas Day against the Green Bay Packers. He was out of that game for a while before returning.
