Mark Cavendish was determined – perhaps he was destined – to break the record for Tour de France stage wins.

In a post on social media Belgian Merckx, who won the Tour five times between 1969-1974, wrote: “Congratulations to Marc on this historic performance. A nice guy who has broken my record on the Tour.”
Cavendish had jointly held the record with Merckx for most Tour stage wins since winning his 34th stage in 2021.

Cavendish’s love affair with the Tour began on 7 July 2008 at Chateauroux – the first of four stage wins in that edition of the race.
After rising to prominence in the newly formed British Cycling Academy under the supervision of Rod Ellingworth, his breakthrough moment arguably came on the track in 2005 with a world title in the madison.
But his ability to read finishes, weave into position and generate devastating acceleration has helped make him formidable at La Grande Boucle.
Since drawing level with Belgian great Merckx in 2021, Cavendish has had to deal with a knife-edge robbery and the uncertainty of finding a new team at the age of 37.
Retirement
Cavendish had pushed back his retirement after the untimely end of his 2023 season, and his desire for another stage win drove him back to the Tour de France.

Officials were seen meeting with Astana-Kazakhstan and Alpecin-Decninsk employees on Thursday morning to threaten sanctions for any further irregularities.
The UCI’s move comes after safety concerns arose following two horrific, crashing bunch finishes in the Tour peloton.
Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, Intermarche-Vanti, Israel Premier Tech and several other teams have complained about dangerous sprinting after Stage 3 on Monday and Cavendish’s big day at St. Woolbas on Wednesday.
“We are continuing where we finished last year in the Tour de France,” Intermarché director Wiesbeek told Weilerfleets. “There’s dangerous racing out there and juries don’t do anything about it.
“Our sprinter Biniyam Girme was disqualified in Tirreno-Adriatico for something that was not half as bad as what happened in the sprint to St. Vulbas.”
Cavendish’s 70km/h run to an historic victory on Wednesday was interrupted when Mads Pedersen crashed heavily after getting caught in the left-hand race course barriers.
Manx’s legend-making sprint was also not entirely straightforward.
The 39-year-old was seen running side by side with Phil Bauhaus and Fernando Gaviria as he cruised to his first Tour win in three years and the 35th of his career.
Jurors later demoted Bahaua to the peloton and fined him 500 Swiss francs for engaging in argy-bargy.
A bruised and battered Pedersen was cleared to start Stage 6 on Thursday morning after some uncertainty over his condition.
