The camaraderie of the Las Vegas Aces was on full display Tuesday evening when the entire team and staff immediately rallied around guard Kate Martin after the rookie suffered a serious injury to his lower right leg.

Martin was subbed out with 1:19 remaining in the first quarter of the game against the Chicago Sky. The Aces (16-8) struggled against the scoring ability of Chennady Carter and Angel Reese and ultimately lost to the Sky (10-14) 93-85.

Martin was dribbling on the court when she appeared to slip and fall to the ground, catching her right ankle, where she remained in obvious pain and discomfort for about a minute.

Within seconds, Martin’s teammates, including the entire Aces bench, surrounded him on the court, as several teammates used towels to shield the former Iowa Hawkeyes player from the cameras.

“No matter what happens, I’m going to take care of my rookie,” Aces star A’ja Wilson said in a post-game press conference. “He is one of us. She’s our sister and someone we will always depend on and trust, but at the same time, you have cameras coming into your business and we don’t want that, we don’t need that. We try to protect his peace, his mental and just his spirit.

Wilson said, “We’re going to protect him at all costs because you never know what the Internet or people can do.”

Martin was eventually helped out of the court. She returned to the bench in the second half wearing sweatpants over her uniform but did not play again.
Aces coach Becky Hammon said she didn’t get a chance to talk to the medical staff and couldn’t provide further details about the status of Martin’s injury.

“I know (he’s) very tough, so I don’t know how bad it is but he’s a tough cookie,” Hammon said after the game.
Martin’s injury comes as the WNBA is entering its week-long Olympic break. The Aces are not scheduled to play until Aug. 17, when they face the table-topping New York Liberty (21-4).

Kate Martin has been one of the WNBA’s best stories this season, but she finished Tuesday’s Las Vegas Aces game with obvious pain.

The rookie from Iowa went down badly in the first quarter against the Chicago Sky, falling awkwardly after contact with defender Dana Evans. Martin’s teammates were so concerned that they immediately surrounded him, with some players going so far as to use towels to hide him from the cameras.
Martin walked off the court and was later declared out for the remainder of the game with a lower right leg injury. The good news is that Martin looked much better when she took the court wearing a jersey and sweatpants before the start of the second half.

It seemed like she was still limping a bit, but walking under her own power. He received a good cheer from the fans at the Michelob Ultra Arena.
Martin suffered the injury when the Sky stunned the Aces in the first quarter, which ended with Chicago up 25–12. Las Vegas closed the gap in the fourth quarter, but another Sky run snapped the Aces’ four-game winning streak and Chicago won 93–85.

Chennady Carter led all scorers for the Sky with a season-high 34 points, while Aces star A’ja Wilson had another stellar game with 28 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks and three steals.

Martin entered Tuesday averaging just 3.6 points and 2.0 rebounds in 14.3 minutes per game for the defending champions, but his unexpected story and fit in the Aces’ locker room made him an instant fan favorite in Las Vegas. While most second-round draft picks do not even make their team’s roster, Martin played his way into a good team’s rotation.

Hopefully, he won’t have to waste too much time moving forward.
