A PennsylvaniaPennsylvania College Board member whose racial slur on the street went viral after his rampage went viral has left his post at the school as video of the assault went viral.
Jonathan Spanos, a local restaurant owner, resigned from his position on the Penn State York advisory board earlier this week after he was recorded shouting profanities multiple times in a 40-second video posted on .
Spanos was caught confronting an unknown man and woman in the middle of a street when he made lewd comments towards both of them.
“Keep making videos,” Spanos challenged from behind the camera to the woman who had confronted him several times for verbal abuse.
“I’m a racist,” Spanos says, as the man he was debating with confirms, “John Spanos is a racist.”
The former advisory board member alleged that his opponents “pointed the finger” at him and that they were wrong.
Penn State York confirmed Spanos’ resignation Tuesday in a series of responses to the original video on Ax.
“This hateful language has no place in our community and does not reflect the university’s values or our desire to foster an inclusive environment,” the school’s official X account wrote. “The appropriate offices at Penn State have been notified and we are looking into this matter diligently.
A follow-up message said, “Jonathan Spanos is no longer a member of the Penn State York Advisory Board.”

The original video posted on its own dedicated X account has been viewed more than 60,000 times and local civil rights groups have condemned the comment.
The NAACP York County branch called on Spanos to take immediate action to resign his board seat and ownership of Paddock on Market, a seafood restaurant located in York, PA.
“The NAACP York County Branch is deeply troubled by the recent incident involving Mr. Jonathan Spanos,” President Jamil Alexander said Monday. “Such behavior is malicious and completely contrary to the values of equality and respect that our community strives to uphold.”
Spanos held a press conference on Wednesday where he apologized for the abuse.
“My name is Jonathan Spanos, I’m the guy who was recorded using racist language in the recently released video,” he said, according to Fox 43’s video.
“I am humiliated and embarrassed by my behavior, the community I have served for over 25 years, the state and government, the human people deserve better than me.”
The restaurant owner says he was approached by a group of pastors and other leaders where he was encouraged to confess his sins and ask for forgiveness.
Spanos apologized during his apology, saying the outburst was caused by a “heated family confrontation.”
“Because of the wide distribution of the video, I hope this confession and appeal for forgiveness will also be far-reaching,” he said.
During the press conference, Spanos was joined by members of the NAACP, the Black Ministers Association and the Confronting Racism Coalition.
Dr. Sherry Washington, incoming president of NAACP York County, said, “Our presence at this conference in no way implies that everything is OK because everything is not OK.”
Dr. Larry Walthour said, “The Coalition to Confront Racism views Mr. Spanos’ apology and ownership of those actions as an important first step in a long journey toward healing, equality, inclusion and reconciliation in this community.”
