Video footage of Team GB dressage star Charlotte Dujardin applying a whip to a horse’s legs has been released – as the Olympian has pulled out of Paris 2024 amid claims she has deployed the practice in the past.
Team GB’s dressage team queen was sensationally banned from the sport just days before the Paris Olympics after she was accused of hitting her horse’s legs with the whip more than 24 times.
Six-time Olympic medalist Dujardin was hoping to become Britain’s most decorated female Olympian – currently tied with cyclist Laura Kenny – but she was forced to pull out of the Games yesterday after a former eventer Said his career was ‘dangerous’.

Mr Wensing claimed his client had seen this practice happen several times.
He said: ‘My client used to have a sponsor, and she was in the UK, and she sponsored a lesson for a student to Charlotte. It was a young girl of 19 who was riding her horse, and she got lessons from Charlotte Dujardin in Britain.
‘Charlotte Dujardin was in the middle of the field. He said to the student, ‘Your horse will have to lift his legs more in the canter.’
‘She whipped long and she was whipping the horse more than 24 times a minute and really hard, really hard, really hard.
‘This is not just an incident. My client charlotte dujardy.

Mr Wensing had earlier compared the treatment to ‘an elephant in the circus’. He said the incident took place in 2022 – but Dujardin claims his ‘error in judgement’ occurred four years earlier.
It is understood that the athlete struck the horse’s legs when he tried to teach the horse to ‘piaffe’, a slow trotting technique associated with dressage.
Those giving instructions on piaffe usually do this by patting the horse very lightly – just enough to encourage him to lift his legs.
The alleged whistleblower filmed the lesson but was warned against making an official complaint due to Dujardin’s already stellar reputation.
‘In the video she takes the long whip and hits the horse more than 24 times; (It’s) dressage’s biggest star,’ Mr Wensing said last night.
‘It is a dark day for dressage as well as Charlotte Dujardin. But in his statement my client says that if dressage is to survive, they have to stop doing this to the horses.
The lawyer said, ‘It makes no sense.’ ‘It has no goal. this is incredible. At the time, my client thought this would be normal. He is an Olympic champion. Who am I to doubt?’

Former ITV Racing announcer and current presenter Alice Plunkett said that Dujardin’s career was in ‘jeopardy’ with the release of the video footage.
‘This is not a video that should make anyone feel comfortable. “It’s not appropriate and it’s not something I’ve seen in the years I’ve been working with horses,” she said.
‘This is not standard practice. She knows this and I don’t understand how she got into that situation because she is someone who has made her living off of horses because she manages them in such a way that they work for her.
‘Valegro [Dujardin’s horse] doesn’t perform the way he planned for him.

“It is our responsibility and important that we address any cases of abuse, as the welfare of the horses cannot be compromised,” said Ingmar de Vos, president of the federation. He said he would continue the investigation.
Dujardin, 39, is a star of dressage, the event in which horses are judged on how well they perform movements set to music.
