Inside Carolina was first to report that Belichick had interviewed with the Tar Heels for the program’s inaugural event, which was later confirmed by several other outlets. North Carolina fired Mack Brown last month after a 6-6 season, and the 73-year-old went 44-33 in six years in Chapel Hill.
It’s an interesting and somewhat surprising move from Belichick, who is 72 years old and has never coached at the college level before. But he’s adamant that he wants to coach again since his 24-year run with the Patriots ended last year, and he’s apparently exploring every avenue to get back on the sidelines.
Andrew Carter of The News & Observer reported that Belichick “blew them away in interviews” with the Tar Heels, although he added that Belichick was unlikely to be hired given his age and lack of experience at the collegiate level.
Bill Belichick has no college coaching experience
While Belichick is arguably the greatest coach to do so in the NFL – with six Super Bowl rings as head coach for the Patriots and two others as defensive coordinator for the New York Giants – he has never coached in college. He began his career as a special assistant with the Baltimore Colts in 1975 and remained in the NFL until the end of his tenure in New England.
He had several media appearances last year, but this is the first time Belichick has interviewed for a college-level job.
