A group of people carrying Nazi flags demonstrated anti-Semitism outside a community theater performance of “The Diary of Anne Frank” in Livingston County, Michigan.

During Saturday’s drama, several masked people were seen waving Nazi flags and reportedly shouting anti-Semitic and racist slurs outside the American Legion Post 141 in Howell, according to CNN affiliate WXYZ.

“People were surprised. They were shocked,” Army veteran Bobby Bright told WXYZ. “Everything you’d expect.”
Bright said that many of the 75 people who saw the play were afraid to leave the building and had to be carried to their cars.

“No one in America should have to feel this way,” he said.

Protestors were also seen in the nearby town of Fowlerville, according to witnesses.

Alex Sutcliffe and his wife were driving home through downtown Fowlerville when they came across a group of masked men waving Nazi flags.

“They were saying horrible anti-Semitic things that I don’t even feel comfortable repeating,” Sutliff told CNN on Tuesday.

Sutliff, who filmed the brief encounter, said the group “all put their hands up” and chanted “Hail Hitler, Hail Trump.”

Suttliff’s interaction with the protesters took place at a stoplight and when the light turned green, he walked away before matters escalated.

He and his wife called local police to report what they saw and then turned back to tell protesters that officers were on their way.

“As soon as they heard they were on their way, they all packed up their things and ran away.”

CNN has contacted the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office for more information.
Fowlerville Community Theatre, which commissioned the production, said in a statement that the play “focuses on real people who lost their lives in the Holocaust” and that the cast and crew “strive to tell their story with as much realism as possible.” “

“Things got more real than we expected on Saturday evening,” the group said. “The presence of opposition!

Citing the Sheriff’s Office, The Detroit News reported that protesters left after being asked to vacate the Legion Post’s parking lot, then exchanged brief words with patrons across the street.

The Anti-Defamation League’s regional office in Michigan said on social media that it was “disgusted by the far-right extremists who praised Hitler and waved Nazi flags outside the US military that was hosting the play.”

The county has faced similar displays of racism this year. In July, white supremacists marched through Howell, located about 40 miles northwest of Detroit.

Preliminary data provided to CNN by the ADL shows that threats against Jews in the US have tripled in the one-year period since Hamas launched a deadly October 7 attack on Israel. In the weeks following October 7, reports of hate crimes and bias incidents targeting Jews, Muslims, and Arabs increased across the United States.

How did die

Protesters waved Nazi flags outside a community theater production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” in Michigan, authorities said Monday, calling the cast “deeply shaken” by the disgusting display.

The shocking protest by a handful of masked people took place Saturday night outside the American Legion Post 141 in Howell, where a play by Francis Goodrich and Albert Hackett was being staged.

Even though U.S. military staff members kept the swastika-waving protesters “under control” and “moved off the property”, the show’s producers decided to inform everyone in the house at intermission about what was happening outside.

“For this production, our actors were also on stage during intermission when they discovered it,” Fowlerville Community Theater said in a statement.
“Although some people were naturally shaken, they pulled together and completed the performance with strength and professionalism.”

Livingston County Sheriff’s deputies were called about a “disturbance” at 7:43 p.m., officials said.
“The five masked protesters were asked to leave the property and did so,” Sheriff Michael Murphy said in a statement.

Protesters walked across the street and waved swastika-emblazoned flags before a man approached them and an argument began, Murphy said.

“Nothing physical occurred and the parties involved ultimately separated,” he said.

Michigan has been a hot spot of American politics as it is one of the states that swung to the right and gave President-elect Donald Trump a narrow victory.

“We are disgusted by the far-right extremists who praised Hitler and waved Nazi flags outside the American Legion hosting the play ‘The Diary of Anne Frank,’ and we stand with the American Legion 141” and Howell Township , to show that they “know that” hate does not belong in their community, the Michigan Anti-Defamation League said in a statement.

Fowlerville Community Theater drew direct parallels between the play – adapted from Ann’s famous diary.

The Diary of a Young Girl

“The Diary of Anne Frank” was published posthumously and has been translated into more than 70 languages in more than 60 countries, along with several film and stage adaptations. Her diary is often a teenager’s first introduction to the horrors of genocide during World War II.

He and seven others, all Jews, hidden in a secret location above a canalside warehouse in Amsterdam for almost two years, were detained and deported in 1944. Anne later died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the age of 15.

Growing fears of anti-Semitism remain a current issue – including in Amsterdam. In July, a statue of Anne in a local park was vandalized with the word “Gaza” painted in red. More recently, people were beaten and injured in violent clashes between fans of an Israeli soccer team and counter-protesters in the city over the weekend, which Dutch authorities condemned as anti-Semitism.
