A statement from his family said: “Alain Fabian, Anouchka, Anthony, as well as (their dog) Lubo, are deeply saddened to announce the passing of their father.
“He died peacefully at his home in Duchy, surrounded by his three children and his family.”
Le Parisien newspaper called Delon “a giant of the cinema”, while Libération described him as “a leading man of the cinema, a symbol of shadowy masculinity, an actor with mad charisma”.
In a statement to AFP, Brigitte Bardot said that Delon “represented the best of France’s ‘prestigious cinema'”.
“An ambassador of elegance, talent, beauty. I have lost a friend, an alter ego, a partner.”
Delon’s last major public appearance was to receive an honorary Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2019.
He gave an emotional speech in the program in which he was seen saying goodbye to cinema.

Delon also made headlines in February this year when French police seized 72 firearms and 3,000 rounds of ammunition from his house. Prosecutors said he did not have a gun license.
