Turning against his party’s presidential nominee Donald Trump, former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., gave a prime-time speech in support of Vice President Harris.
While taking the stage, Kinzinger acknowledged that he was forming a “strange alliance” with the Democrats. But he said he was forming the coalition “to defend the truth, to defend democracy and decency.”
Kinzinger, who has been a vocal critic of Trump for years, said the former president had “strangled the soul of the Republican Party.”
“Vote for our core values and vote for Kamala Harris,” Kinzinger said. He said he was supporting Harris despite policy disagreements with her.
“The matters of principle, decency and loyalty to this nation pale in comparison to the fundamental policies on which we disagree,” he said.
The Harris campaign — as well as the then-Biden campaign — is drawing heavy support from moderate Republicans and independents who are suspicious of Trump’s politics and leadership.
A group of Republicans, including Kinzinger, have come together to support Harris, and recently held an online rally under the affinity group “Republicans for Harris.”
Kinzinger said he lost confidence in Trump and experienced “deep sadness” after January 6.
“Donald Trump is a weak man pretending to be strong. He is a small man pretending to be a big man. He is an unbeliever who pretends to be righteous. He’s a criminal who can’t stop playing the victim,” he said.

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger attacked Donald Trump at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night.
Republicans and conservatives called out the former president and convicted criminal in his speech, and called Trump a “weak man, pretending to be strong.”
“Donald Trump has strangled the soul of the Republican Party.
Their fundamental weakness has spread like a disease through my party,” Kinzinger said.
Kinzinger explained why as a Republican he is against Trump and his political party.
“Some have raised questions, some have questioned why I have taken this stance. The answer is really simple: Ladies and gentlemen, we must put the country first, and speaking before you tonight as a Republican, I am putting our country first,” Kinzinger said. “Because the truth is that I belong here. I know Kamala Harris shares my devotion to the rule of law, the Constitution, and democracy.”
Kinzinger endorsed President Biden in late June, saying he knew Biden would “always protect the thing that makes America the best country in the world: our democracy.” He criticized Trump in 2019, when he called out Trump for supporting civil war by retweeting an extremist pastor. The then-congressman also criticized QAnon and other right-wing conspiracy theories, and rejected right-wing claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
Following the Capitol insurrection in 2021, Kinzinger called for Trump’s removal from office, and not only supported the January 6 Committee but served on it as one of two Republicans. In 2022, facing opposition from Trump supporters in the GOP, he chose to run for reelection.

Former Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris for president in his Democratic National Convention speech, saying that “Donald Trump has strangled the soul of the Republican Party.”

Kinzinger, who will represent Illinois in Congress from 2011 to 2023, delivered his speech Thursday night at Chicago’s United Center not to Democrats, but to members of his own party.

In the wake of the violent insurrection, Kinzinger was one of only ten Republicans to vote to impeach Trump in the former president’s second impeachment trial.
Kinzinger also voted to create a select committee to investigate the January 6 riot and then joined it. He and former Representative Liz Cheney were the only Republicans on the committee.
“Our democracy was weakened by the events of January 6, as Donald Trump’s deceit and insults led to the siege of the United States Capitol,” he said. “How can any party claim to be patriotic if it idolises the man who subverted free and fair elections!
