Malik Willis trade a 2025 seventh-round draft pick: multiple reports
Tennessee quarterback Malik Willis threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, leading the Titans to a 30-27 preseason win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
On Monday, the Auburn alumnus was on the move again – this time without the Tennessee offense. The Titans are trading Willis to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a seventh-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Neither team has announced the trade, but it was confirmed by ESPN, NFL Network and the Green Bay Gazette on Monday.
Jordan Love will be Green Bay’s starting quarterback in 2024. But neither of the other two quarterbacks on the Packers’ preseason roster has thrown a pass in an NFL regular-season game. Sean Clifford was a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and Michael Pratt was a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Preparing for his third NFL season, Willis was competing with free-agent acquisition Mason Rudolph to serve as Will Lewis’ backup at Tennessee.
Over the course of three preseason appearances, Rudolph completed 31 of 49 passes for 365 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions, while Willis completed 20 of 27 passes for 205 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Rudolph was sacked once, and Willis was sacked five times. Willis was Tennessee’s leading rusher in the preseason with 101 yards on 11 carries. Rudolph had 16 yards on eight carries.

Calling Rudolph “the epitome of consistency” on Monday, Titans coach Brian Callahan said: “Malik really played well for himself in (Sunday’s) game. I thought he played well. He made some good throws on tape. You can still see his athleticism with the ball in his hands.
While not mentioning the trade, Callahan talked about the need to decide between keeping Rudolph or Willis due to NFL roster rules.
The NFL plans to allow teams to have a third quarterback on the practice squad, who can be elevated to active status without restrictions as needed in 2024. Every NFL team has two practice squads.

The Green Bay Packers are going young with their backup quarterback but it will be Tennessee’s Malik Willis and not one of their recent draft picks.
The Packers have sent a seventh-round draft pick to the Tennessee Titans for Willis, a third-round pick in the 2022 draft, a source confirmed. The selection is not conditional and will be delivered in 2025.
Willis started three games for the Titans over two years and threw no touchdowns and three interceptions in those games, leaving him 1–2. He completed 31 of 61 passes for 276 yards.
Willis played better in the preseason this year, completing 20 of 27 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, but he was demoted to the backup position behind recent first-round pick Will Lewis to Mason. Couldn’t beat Rudolph.
The 6-0 1/2, 219-pound Willis is not a typical quarterback you would associate with coach Matt LaFleur or general manager Brian Gutekunst.

Unlike Love, who is 6-4 and comfortable in the pocket, Willis resembles Justin Fields or Jalen Hurts due to his size and running ability.
Willis has a strong arm like Love, but he is more capable of running with the ball and the Packers may have to incorporate some read-options into their scheme to get the most out of him. Willis originally went to Auburn but transferred and spent his final two years at Liberty University.
The Packers are trading Willis for 2023 fifth-round pick Sean Clifford and 2024 seventh-round pick Michael Pratt.
Malik Willis traded a 2025 seventh-round draft pick: multiple reports
The two picks combined to lead the offense to three touchdowns in 28 series, which is not going to happen in the regular season. His individual statistics were not as important as his ability to carry the team.
Pratt has a better arm and has averaged more yards per game (4.78 to 3.76) than Clifford. One of his drives ran out of time and might have resulted in a score if it had happened earlier in the game, but only once did he get the ball in the end zone. He was held scoreless in six possessions against Denver.
