The Seattle Seahawks traded edge rusher Darrell Taylor to the Chicago Bears for a sixth-round pick on Friday, according to a report from NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero. Taylor was selected in the second round by the Seahawks in 2020 and has consistently been among the team’s leaders throughout his career.

An explosive athlete, Taylor has recorded 21.5 sacks in 49 career NFL games. However, limitations in other parts of his game, particularly defending the run, limited Taylor to 13 career starts and explained why he was not valued in the trade market the way a younger player would. What can be expected with their SAC numbers.

Taylor missed his entire rookie season due to a stress fracture in his foot, but has missed only one regular season game since. While the Seahawks are clearly confident they will be able to replace Taylor’s contributions, his numbers were quite good for a pass-rush specialist. Despite playing only 44% of Seattle’s defensive snaps last season, Taylor recorded 28 tackles, 8 quarterback hits, 7 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and one pass defensed.

Seattle has invested heavily in its defensive front in recent years. They traded for defensive tackle Leonard Williams last season and later re-signed nose tackle Johnathan Hankins this offseason. Additionally, the Seahawks used second-round picks on linebackers in 2022 (Boy Maffei) and 2023 (Derrick Hall).

It remains to be seen whether the Seattle Seahawks or Los Angeles Rams pose a major threat to the San Francisco 49ers chances of winning the NFC West. However, any move that sends a productive role player out of the division for future draft capital and some modest salary cap savings is a small win for the Niners’ chances this season.

Trade outside linebacker

On the eve of the Seattle Seahawks’ preseason finale, general manager John Schneider remains a busy man as he works to trim the roster ahead of the cut deadline.

The Hawks traded cornerback Mike Jackson to the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, and the team made another trade Friday morning according to a report from NFL insider Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The second trade in as many days sends former second-round pick Darrell Taylor to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Taylor finished his Seattle career with 21.5 sacks over four years, though he only saw the field in three seasons after spending his rookie season on the non-football injury list while recovering from surgery to repair a stress fracture.

The fact that he spent the entire 2020 season on the NFI list made him a restricted free agent in the spring rather than an unrestricted free agent. The Bears added Taylor after failing to acquire Matthew Judon from the New England Patriots earlier in the week.

Missing Matthew Judon

The Chicago Bears acquired linebacker Darrell Taylor from the Seattle Seahawks on Friday in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The trade comes after the Bears reportedly pursued — but failed to acquire — outside linebacker Matthew Judon. The Atlanta Falcons acquired the four-time Pro Bowl selection from the New England Patriots on August 14. “It’s exciting for us to get (Taylor),” Bears coach Matt Eberflus said on 670 The Score in Chicago. “He has sack production, he’s a really good pass rusher. He fits into our scheme in terms of his effort, his style, his temperament.” Taylor, 27, recorded 5.5 sacks and 28 tackles in 17 games (five starts) last season. Since being selected by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, he has totaled 21.5 sacks, 91 tackles and five forced fumbles in 49 career games (13 starts). He missed his rookie season due to offseason surgery on a foot injury he suffered during college at Tennessee. Also on Friday, the Seahawks signed undrafted rookie cornerback Willie Roberts from Louisiana Tech. Roberts participated in Seattle’s rookie minicamp after recording 38 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in 12 games (all starts) last season. –Field Level Media

Seahawks edge Uchenna Nwosu is expected to require season-ending surgery after tearing a pectoral muscle during Sunday’s win over the Cardinals, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

This would leave Seattle without its key leading man. Boye Mafe and Darrell Taylor finished Sunday’s play as the top two. Mafe played a season high 79% of the snaps and had a sack for the fourth consecutive game.

Taylor tallied his first 1.5 sacks of the season against the Cardinals. His 59% snap share is up from last week, but there is no season-high increase in share or total snaps. Mafe – a second-round pick in 2022 – is the better IDP bet among them the rest of the way. We’ll see what other changes lie ahead for the Seahawks. Nwosu’s contract runs through 2026, with the dead-cap penalty keeping him with the team until at least 2025.
