The major star power on display at the podium and on stage continued on the third night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
Amid rousing speeches from political VIPs including former President Bill Clinton, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and 2024 vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, music giants lit up Chicago’s United Center arena.
Night 3 hosted performances by Stevie Wonder, John Legend along with Sheila E. and Maren Morris.
Kicking off the night’s freedom theme, the first musical moment of Night 3 was a rendition of the national anthem by 2019 Minnesota Teacher of the Year Jess Davis. Soon after, Maren Morris fired up the crowd with her 2020 single “Better Than We Found It”.
“When the lines of tomorrow are drawn / Can I stay with the side I’ve chosen? / Will we just sit on our hands and do nothing about it? / Or will we leave this world better than we found it?,” she questions in the chorus.

The track’s message was fitting considering how the chart-topping country-pop maven has particularly distanced herself from country music in recent years, and her efforts to fuel a “culture war”. The genre’s biggest stars are to blame.
“After the Trump years, people’s biases were on full display,” Morris told the Los Angeles Times in 2023. All these things were being celebrated, and it was weirdly in sync with this hyper-masculine branch of country music.

Stevie Wonder took the stage at the 2024 Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night (August 21), where he played his irresistible hit “Higher Ground” from 1973’s Innervisions.
Before the performance, Wonder delivered the keynote address at the event, which runs this evening at Chicago’s United Center. Wonder formally endorsed Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz and urged the crowd to “choose courage over complacency.”

“I pray a lot this year for peace to come to the nations of our world,” Wonder said in his speech. “But, also, for the heart of each one of us, even though our hearts have been beaten and broken. Beyond prayer, I know the importance of action, and now is the time to understand where we are, and what it takes to win.
He added: “We must keep moving forward until we truly become a united people of these United States of America. And then we’ll get to a higher level,” he said, teasing his upcoming performance, which featured Wonder on Keys belted out by dancers and a live band.
Wonder last appeared at the Democratic National Convention in 2008 to drum up support for then-candidate Barack Obama.
Later in the evening, John Legend and Sheila E. appeared for a live performance by Prince.

John Legend and Stevie Wonder are set to perform at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday.
The two were spotted at the United Center during sound check hours before the third day began.
The convention is packed with musical guests and celebrities, including Lil Jon, Patti Labelle and Common, among other musical guests.
Performer James Taylor was also seen rehearsing at sound check on Monday, but was removed from programming due to the show running behind schedule.

For the past two days, the Democrats have brought together some celebrity entertainment for their convention. Notable moments include a surprise appearance by rapper Lil Jon and a performance by Patti LaBelle during Georgia’s roll call vote.

Stevie Wonder used his keyboard as a podium on the Democratic convention stage, and gave a brief speech before entering “Higher Ground”.

He asked the audience, “Are you all ready to reach higher? Because you know we need Kamala Harris.
The 74-year-old music legend then performed his classic 1973 album “Innervisions” accompanied by a DJ and dancers dressed in white.
Wonder also sang the song at the 2008 convention in Denver at which Barack Obama was nominated.
John Legend and Sheila E. celebrated Minnesota Governor Tim Walz with a rendition of the state’s son Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” at the Democratic convention.

Walz has spoken extensively about Minnesota music and expressed his affection for Bob Dylan, the Replacements, Hüsker Dü and Prince, who died in 2016.
“I’m here to help protect our democracy and elect someone with a really positive vision for the future,” Legend told The Associated Press before the convention.

Stevie Wonder advocates love (and mentions the Vice President) while speaking at Duke Fakir’s funeral service. During Friday’s final farewell for the Four Tops star, Wonder performed two gospel songs and thanked Kamala Harris.
After singing “The Lord’s Prayer” and sharing a quick “Amen” with the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church crowd, Wonder simply said the name of the presumptive Democratic nominee, “Kamala Harris.” He then paused as the crowd continued to applaud and repeated: “Kamala Harris. There, I said it.
Before singing at the service, Wonder celebrated Fakir’s legacy and called for a focus on love rather than hate. “We as Michiganders cannot allow hatred to spread in our state or country,” he said to applause. “This is the voice of young America. Hear We have to understand again that we are being challenged again by things that we cannot allow to happen again.
“We can’t let love be overcome by negativity, we can’t do that,” he said.

Harris and Wonder met each other a day before Fakir’s funeral, when the politician and the singer eulogized Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee at a funeral in Arizona. Harris has been a lifelong Wonder fan, sharing in 2019 that his favorite album of all time is Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life. She also shared a birthday post for Wonder in 2020, calling him a “living legend and a longtime hero of mine.”
A representative for Wonder did not immediately confirm that the comments were an endorsement of Harris’ candidacy by Wonder nor did he respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment.
Wonder has been known for his political involvement in the past. In addition to endorsing local races, he endorsed Biden for president in 2020 and sang “Happy Birthday” for Hillary Clinton after she endorsed him in 2016. “Truth be told, I think we men have a chance to make it work. It’s time to let a woman do it,” she said at the time.
