Ethiopian runner Tamirat Tola ended Kenya’s dominance in the race by winning the men’s marathon at the Paris Olympics on Saturday.

Tola finished in an Olympic record time of 2 hours, 6 minutes and 26 seconds, with Belgium’s Bashir Abdi 21 seconds behind and Benson Kipruto winning the bronze medal for Kenya by 34 seconds.

Tola, 32, looked back as he approached the line, but he was clear and had time to receive applause. Two weeks earlier, he entered the Olympic marathon as a replacement for injured teammate Sisay Lemma.

“I was a reserve in the Ethiopian team, but when Sisay got injured I had my chance,” Tola said. “I was fully prepared and knew I could achieve my dream. I am very proud, very happy.”

It was Tola’s second Olympic medal, the other coming in the 10,000 meters at the 2016 Rio Games.

“I accomplished a lot in marathons after coming back from the track,” said Tola, who broke a 12-year-old course record by winning the New York Marathon last year.
It was also the second Olympic medal for 35-year-old Abdi and the Somalia-born athlete went one better than his bronze medal at the Tokyo Games three years ago.
In a major race, Tola again outperformed Abdi in the marathon. They defeated him at the 2022 World Championships, where Abdi finished third.

Britain’s Emile Keres finished fourth on Saturday and still had enough energy for a sprint finish after 42 kilometers (26 miles) in the sun.

Two-time defending champion Eliud Kipchoge struggled throughout. He was more than eight minutes behind Tola at the 30 kilometer mark and did not finish.

The last non-Kenyan to win at the London Games was Ugandan Stephen Kiprotich in 2012.

Kipchoge, 39, was seeking to become the first man to win the race three times. Ethiopian Abebe Bikila won it consecutively in 1960 and 1964, and Waldemar Sierpinski did the same in 1976 and 1980, representing the then East Germany.

Schedule & Results

Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola dominated the men’s marathon in Paris, winning in Olympic record time, while Team GB’s Emile Carreras finished fourth.

Tola won in two hours, six minutes and 26 seconds, beating the previous record set by Kenya’s Samuel Wanjiru in 2008 by six seconds.

Belgium’s Bashir Abdi (2:06.47) finished second and won his bronze medal from Tokyo in 2021, while Kenya’s Benson Kipruto (2:07:00) finished third.
Keres was in second place at the 30 km mark, but dropped back to sixth before overtaking two rivals and finishing fourth with a time of 2:07.29.

“It was a good race. I tried to pace myself, be smart, keep myself calm and finish well,” said Keres.
“I didn’t want to miss anything on the course, gave 100% to the race and had no regrets.”

However, there was disappointment for two-time defending champion Eliud Kipchoge who was unable to finish the race after struggling at the back of the field.
The 39-year-old Kenyan, who was attempting to become a three-time Olympic marathon winner for the first time, crashed out with just 10km remaining.
Caress’s British teammates Phil Sesemann and Mahamed Mahamed finished 46th and 57th respectively.

Tola, the 2022 world champion, entered the marathon after an injury to his Ethiopian teammate Sisay Lemma just two weeks earlier.

The 32-year-old took the lead at the halfway stage and gradually increased his lead as the Eiffel Tower came into view again.

Tola said, “I am happy because I accomplished my goal. I prepared well. I worked hard so that I could win. In my life, this is my biggest achievement.”

“I was a reserve in the Ethiopian team but when Sisay [Lemma] got injured, I got the chance to represent them. I was fully prepared and knew I could achieve my dream. I’m happy to do it today “
