Josh Shapiro’s climb to the top of the Democratic Party mountain in Pennsylvania has been marked by a steady series of successes — including eight straight general election victories — that may seem like the result of some calculated master plan.
Most of those wins have come in extremely competitive races as Shapiro either helped solidify the Democratic Party’s gains in the densely populated Philadelphia suburbs, or helped turn statewide races in permanently purple Pennsylvania.
But much of it went according to plan, say friends and even some old rivals. Shapiro’s real political talent lay in recognizing good opportunities, making the most of them with well-honed political skills, and common Basically, it lies in their habit of finding ways. Appeal to most people along the way.

Undoubtedly, most winning streaks begin after defeats. Shapiro, whose campaign did not respond to interview requests for this story, says the origins of his successful political career can be attributed to some early dreams shattered at the University of Rochester.
There, he told a campus interviewer in 2020, he started with the intention of following in the footsteps of his father, pediatrician Steven Shapiro, and becoming a pre-med student with the hopes of playing basketball.
But during his freshman year, Shapiro said an organic chemistry class changed his feeling about the major, and he was cut from the basketball team. For some new college students, these things can create an identity crisis.
Already a first-year member of the university’s Student Senate, he decided to pour his energies into student government. That spring, he told Rochester’s Campus Times in 2020, “When they were taking the nomination for president, I said: ‘You know what?’ I love this school so much, I care deeply about these issues.” I do […] I’ll give it a try.”

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (D) formally endorsed Vice President Harris to lead the Democratic Party presidential ticket in November following the news that President Biden was dropping out of the race.
“The best path forward for the Democratic Party is to quickly unify behind Vice President Harris and refocus on winning the presidency,” Shapiro said in a statement Sunday. “The contradictions in this race could not be clearer and the path to victory in November runs through Pennsylvania – where this collective action began.

I will do everything I can to help elect Kamala Harris as the 47th President of the United States.
Shapiro, who like Harris served as attorney general of his home state, discussed his working relationship with Harris and noted their similarities in the same statement.
“I’ve known Kamala Harris for nearly two decades — we’ve both been prosecutors, we’ve both stood up for the rule of law, we’ve both fought for people and delivered results,” the governor said.
Shapiro is among several Democratic governors who have been tipped to serve as Harris’s running mate or Biden’s replacement at the top of the ticket. Other governors include Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D), North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D), Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D), and Maryland Governor Wes Moore (D).
The governor made national headlines in 2022 when he defeated Republican Doug Mastriano in the Pennsylvania gubernatorial contest.
Shapiro was praised for her unifying voice in the wake of the assassination attempt against former President Trump in Butler, PA, last week. The governor also made headlines for his response to the East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment that hit Pennsylvania last year.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is inviting the public to send him text messages after announcing a new phone number offered through the community.
Do you have a question about Pennsylvania’s state government? Well, now you can message Governor Josh Shapiro directly at 717-788-8990, he announced Friday.
The number is powered by an SMS engagement platform called Community that connects elected officials, businesses, public figures and sports teams with their audiences through unique 10-digit phone numbers. Last year, President Joe Biden launched a community number to hear stories of gun violence and alert people about the president’s travel plans.
Shapiro joins neighboring New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, who launched his own community number last month.

People who message Shapiro’s number can also opt in to receive updates on actions by Shapiro’s administration, according to a news release. The text service also connects residents to services in the state and provides Pennsylvanians another way to contact their state government, the release continued.

The community numbers are the latest in the Shapiro administration’s efforts to prove that there is “no wrong door” to reaching out to the government and closing the digital divide. In April, Shapiro unveiled the Commonwealth Office of Digital Experience, or CODEPA, a new agency dedicated to tackling the transformation of digital services.
“To best serve the people of Pennsylvania, we must meet people where they are – and do it effectively and efficiently. No matter how you choose to reach out to the government, you need to know that you will get help, whether you’re walking into a building or sending me a message,” Shapiro said in the release. “More importantly, I want to hear what you think, what I and my administration can do to help, and your stories. “Send us a text at 717-788-8990 to sign up.”

Governor Josh Shapiro grew up in Pennsylvania watching his parents serve their community – his father was a pediatrician, and his mother was a teacher. His example inspired Josh to enter public service.
After graduating from the University of Rochester, Shapiro began working in government while attending law school at night before returning to his hometown and winning election as a state representative. As a representative from 2005–2021, Shapiro helped write and pass some of the toughest ethics laws in state history.
Subsequently, Governor Shapiro was elected Chairman of the Board of Commissioners in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania’s third largest. Facing a $10 million budget deficit and inadequate pensions for county employees, Shapiro led the county back to solid financial position, took early steps to combat the heroin epidemic and helped marry the first LGBTQ couples in Pennsylvania. .
Since 2017, he has served as the Attorney General of Pennsylvanians. He has indicted more than 90 public officials, both Republican and Democrat, for breaking the law. Working with law enforcement partners at the local, state, and federal levels, they have arrested thousands of mid- and high-level drug dealers while investigating and prosecuting pharmaceutical companies and CEOs who knowingly perpetuated the opioid crisis.
Governor Shapiro and his wife Lori live in Montgomery County with their three school-age sons, and their eldest daughter attends the University of Pittsburgh.
