TRUMP GETS $50M BOOST FROM SINGLE DONOR: Timothy Mellon
Billionaire Timothy Mellon donated $50 million to a super PAC supporting Donald Trump as part of a larger influx of funding that helped the former president’s campaign overtake President Joe Biden in May.
Federal filings show Mellon donated $50 million to a pro-Trump super PAC, Make America Great Again Inc., the same day the former president was convicted of 34 felony charges in the New York hush-money case.
Mellon’s donation is now the largest individual contribution of the 2024 election season and the conservative billionaire is the first to disclose more than $100 million in overall campaign contributions this year.
Mellon’s donation was a large portion of the $68.8 billion raised by MAGA Inc. in May — and a big boost for the super PAC, which already had $34.4 million at the end of April.
Mellon’s massive contributions led to a bumper month of fundraising for the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee, as they received $141 million compared to $85 million raised by the Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
It is the second month in a row that Trump has outpaced Biden – sharply cutting into the president’s fundraising advantage.
Last year, Mellon wrote to Robert F. Donated $5 million to Kennedy’s Democratic primary campaign. At the time, Mellon praised Kennedy as “the candidate who can unite the country and root out corruption and is the only Democrat who can win a general election.”
big number
$116 million. The Trump campaign had a total of $91 million in money in the bank at the end of May, while the Biden campaign had $91 million. This is the first time in the 2024 race that Trump’s campaign has more cash than Biden’s.
Earlier this month, MAGA Inc. reportedly told its donors that it planned to spend $100 million through Labor Day. This spending will include an advertising campaign in several key Rust Belt and Sun Belt states.
Timothy Mellon
Timothy Mellon, a billionaire born into one of America’s wealthiest families, has donated $50 million to the Trump campaign super-pack Make America Great Again Inc., according to federal filings released Thursday. Mellon’s contribution is now considered the largest disclosed individual donation in the 2024 election.
Mellon, 81, previously served as president of Pan Am Systems Inc., a private manufacturing and transportation company.
This year, he plans to release a memoir about his experience as president, to be published by Skyhorse Publishing titled Panem.Captain.
According to federal documents, Mellon made his donation on May 31, 2024, just a day after Trump was found guilty of 34 felonies by a New York state court in a landmark hush-money trial.
According to the BBC, Mellon has also donated at least $20 million to the campaign of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential election.
TIME has contacted the Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. campaigns for comment and further information.
According to Forbes, Mellon is the great-grandson of Thomas Mellon, an Irish immigrant who came to America in 1818.
Thomas was a lawyer and judge who invested his money in various real estate projects and banking. By the time of his death, he had amassed a large fortune, which was inherited by his sons. Today, the Mellon family is worth approximately $14.1 billion, making them the 34th richest family in America.
Meanwhile, the Biden campaign has also received some huge donations recently. Billionaire Michael Bloomberg donated $19 million to a pro-Biden political action committee, Future Forward, or FF PAC, the Washington Post reported. The billionaire also donated an additional $929,600 to another organization called the Biden Victory Fund.
