“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” follows three generations of the Deetz family. Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara reprise their roles as Lydia and Delia, respectively, while Jenna Ortega plays Lydia’s daughter, Astrid. Tim Burton began his career with a 1984 short film called Frankenweenie, in which a dead dog was brought back to life by an electric shock. He’s been putting his unique Gothic—and downright Gothic—stamp on films ever since.
A lover of all things black and possessing a signature shock of wild hair resembling The Cure’s goth pioneer Robert Smith, the director may have had his first big (and unglamorous) hit the following year with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, but Yet his preferences were indicated in that film with the unforgettably terrifying appearance of Large Marge, the ghost of a truck driver.
His post-Pee-wee career is filled with ghosts, goblins, skeletons, black goo, and an aesthetic (in a terrifying way) that is both nightmarish and gorgeous, a result of the author’s background as a visual artist.
