Red Sox pitcher Austin Maddox arrested for sexual assault
Former MLB player Austin Maddox has been arrested in Florida after police were caught in an underage sex sting, authorities have announced.
Maddox, the ex-Boston Red Sox pitcher who retired from baseball in 2020, has been accused of soliciting sex over the internet from people he believed were children.
Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said the 33-year-old man was one of 27 people arrested as part of a massive multi-agency operation in April.
“Former Red Sox MLB player Austin Maddox traveled with the intent to engage in sexual activity with a 14-year-old child,” Waters said at a news conference Monday.
Video footage released by the sheriff’s office shows an officer pinning Maddox to the ground, and claiming he “resisted arrest” before bringing out police dogs.
He has been charged with four felony counts, including using a computer to call a child after traveling to meet them. He is being held in jail on $300,000 bond.
It is alleged that on April 28, Maddox began communicating with an agent posing as an underage girl.
According to the arrest report, despite the ‘girl’ telling her they were 14, Maddox expressed his intention to have sex with her. He then agreed to meet her at a pre-arranged place and upon reaching there the police arrested him.
After playing baseball in college for the University of Florida, the Jacksonville native was drafted by the Red Sox in 2012.
He made his MLB debut in 2017 after spending several years in the minor leagues, and spent a total of three months on their roster before being forced to return due to injury problems.
Due to a persistent shoulder injury, he did not get a chance to play and was dropped from the team in 2019 and retired shortly after.
Maddox’s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_Maddoxdefense attorney, James Hill, said that
Maddox, 33, intends to fight the charges, according to his defense attorney James Hill. He will enter a not guilty plea when formal charges are filed against him.
Maddox has been charged with four felonies, including traveling to visit a child after using a computer to call them. Bail has been set at $300,000 for Maddox, who is being held in jail.
The sex sting operation saw Maddox interacting with an undercover agent who pretended to be an underage girl on April 28. According to the arrest report, Maddox said he wanted to have sex with the girl (the undercover agent), even though she had been told otherwise. Told her she was 14 years old.
Maddox, who was born in Jacksonville, played just 13 games in MLB in 2017. He threw 17.1 innings, giving up 13 hits but allowing only one earned run in that span for a 0.52 ERA.
But Maddox didn’t last long in the majors, as shoulder injuries derailed his stay.
He was a standout at the University of Florida during his college days, as he was eventually drafted by Boston in the third round of the 2012 MLB draft. However, things did not take off professionally, as he spent most of his time in the minors.
