The announcement of the poor scorecard led to hilarious scenes as Chernika Johnson and Nina Hughes were forced to confront a roller coaster of emotions.

Johnson and Hughes fought a spectacular ten rounds for the WBA bantamweight world title, but neither could score a finish, putting it on the judges’ scorecards.

However, once ring announcer Lieutenant Dan Hennessy jumped on the mic, chaos ensued.

Hennessey revealed that the judges had scored the fight 98–92 and 96–94 in favor of defending champion Hughes, while one had it 95–95.

But it appeared there was serious confusion among the officials, forcing Hennessey to jump back to the microphone when his mistake was revealed.

Instead, it was Johnson who had the fight ruled in favor by two judges, prompting a booing from Hughes’ team and cheers in Johnson’s corner.

Speaking shortly afterwards, Johnson thought he had done enough to win and when Hughes was initially read out as the winner he felt he “had to accept” the decision.

“I’m not a judge and I’m glad they made the wrong decision,” Johnson said.
“Nina was a tough battle… I’m not the judge but I definitely think I won that battle. I am very happy because I have won this match.”

Hughes was disheartened and frustrated after the fight, wondering how such a big mistake could have been made.

“I don’t understand it,” Hughes said.

“How can they announce that I have won and then change the scores? I thought I would soon dominate. I thought he won some of the later rounds but I felt like I won it comfortably.

“I don’t understand how you can declare a winner and then change the scores.

“It’s a joke. I feel like I’ve been dealt a huge blow. There’s got to be a rematch. I didn’t lose that fight.”

Promoter Lou DiBella was “shocked” and felt Hughes was “upset” that the Hall of Famer agreed.
