Justin Allgaier used pit strategy and the fast No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet to take the lead of Saturday’s Cabo Wabo 250 at Michigan International Speedway with 16 laps remaining in regulation and then moved away from the field in two laps of overtime – warning. Out to finish the race before they arrive.

Allgaier tried for fuel seven laps later than the next six leading runners at the time, returned to the track and eventually – systematically – picked off each car to claim the lead late on.

He raised the white flag indicating one lap remaining and moments later one of the late race leaders, Carson Kvapil, collided with the wall, which became a chain reaction melee that included Chandler Smith and Kyle Sieg, whose The car overturned end-on-end. , Sieg was able to quickly get out of his car and walk to the waiting medical team.

Meanwhile, Allgaier took the yellow and checkered flags just ahead of Joe Gibbs Racing’s Sheldon Creed, JGR’s John Hunter Nemechek, Our Motorsports’ Anthony Alfredo and JR Motorsports’ Sammy Smith.

It is the sixth consecutive top-10 finish in as many races for the 38-year-old Allgaier, who with the win – the 25th of his career – now moves to 10th on the Xfinity Series all-time win list and ahead of his team owner. , NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr.

A bright rainbow hung in the sky as the field settled on pit road just before the overtime restart as NASCAR track crews dried out the famous 2-mile Michigan track after its second brief rain of the day.

Asked to rally again, Allgaier proved his mettle, eventually holding off his teammate Sammy Smith on a restart and then holding off both JGR teammate Creed and defending race winner Nemechek for his second win of the season. Gave.

“I can’t say thank you enough to this team and all these people standing here,” Allgaier said. “It has been an incredible week. We didn’t perform as well as we wanted [in the last race] at Indianapolis.

Qualifying

Cup Series regulars Noah Gragson, Matt DiBenedetto, Craftsman Truck Series championship contender Taylor Gray, Cesar Baccarella and AJ Allmendinger rounded out the top 10. This marks only the third top 10 of Baccarella’s career.

With five regular season races remaining, Sammy Smith moves up to 12th in the championship standings, clinching the final playoff spot by one point over Ryan Sieg, who won Stage 1 and finished 13th on Saturday.

Cole Custer finished an uncharacteristic 30th when his Ford was damaged in a mid-race accident. The defending series champion continues to lead the regular season championship, but his advantage over Michigan race winner Allgaier is now reduced to just 12 points.

The Allgaier is the winner of the rescue race.

Note: Post-race inspection in the Xfinity Series garage was completed without any problems, confirming Justin Allgaier as the winner.

Playoffs

Saturday’s start and stop practice consisted only of a few laps around the 2-mile facility at the Cup Series field, which was ultimately canceled due to inclement weather. Currently in a tie with Chris Buescher for the final playoff spot, Ross Chastain posted the fastest lap in practice around the circuit with a lap of 192.303 mph. Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Larson, William Byron and Bubba Wallace were the five fastest in the short session.

With qualifying also canceled, the starting lineup for Sunday’s race was determined by the NASCAR rule book and Denny Hamlin would lead the field for the second consecutive weekend. Tyler Reddick will join him on the front row with Christopher Bell, Larson and Wallace all taking the green flag in the top five. , saturday recap

RFK, Trackhouse, 23XI fighting to bring in second cars after racing season

The three newest (or rebranded) factions in the Cup garage are holding their breath in the final month of the regular season as they fight to secure both of their charter cars for the 2024 playoffs. Tyler Reddick, Brad Keselowski and Daniel Suarez have all secured their spots in the 16-driver field, but their tandem counterparts still need wins or strong finishes in the next three races to have a chance at the Bill France Cup.

Bubba Wallace, Chris Buescher and Ross Chastain are tied for 15th-17th on the playoff bubble by just three points. Wallace has scored a remarkable 54 points over the elimination line over the last four races, moving himself into the top 16, while Buescher and Chastain are also in a tug-of-war for 16th in points (Buescher takes the tiebreaker based on highest finish). is the owner) in this season).

A little bit of reflecting on their respective teammates, Michigan, Daytona and Darlington could play in Wallace, Buescher and Chastain’s favor. This Sunday is the only trip to Irish Hills, but it was one of three wins for the No. 17 RFK Racing driver last season that pushed Buescher.
