Former New South Wales Liberal Treasurer Matt Kean has faced criticism for taking on a new job as the new chair of the Climate Change Authority after being appointed by the Albany government on Monday.

The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, revealed the former NSW Liberal treasurer had been selected for the “key” role in a surprise cross-party appointment on Monday.

As part of Australia’s commitment to the Paris Agreement, the authority will play a key role in advising the Albany government on its 2035 emissions reduction target, starting early next year.

The Climate Change Minister, Chris Bowen, acknowledged Keane’s Liberal ties, but insisted that “Carbon Dioxide does not recognize political parties”.
Keane, a prominent moderate liberal who has often favored more ambitious climate policies than those proposed by his own party, announced last week that he was leaving politics to work in the private sector, but acknowledged that he would Instead they will remain in the public sector.

On Monday, the state member for Hornsby called for bipartisan consensus in the transition away from fossil fuels.

“It’s not about ideology, it’s about results,” Keane said.
Some people on the conservative side of politics condemned this appointment.

Federal National MP and former Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce questioned whether any of Keane’s words “can be trusted”.

“Can you trust what he said?” Joyce told Sky News. “With all his advocacy? With your bleeding heart, ‘I want to save the world’ kind of attitude? Or do you think you were a mischievous, copycat person who was taking us all for a ride.

“The only thing that’s consistent is that this man is treacherous.”

Guardian Australia contacted Keane for comment on Joyce’s comments.

Other Coalition MPs and senators were more muted in their reaction to the news, with shadow health minister Anne Ruston blaming the announcement on the cost of electricity to homes.

New South Wales Liberal MP Matt Kean has announced his resignation from politics after 13 years in state parliament.

Kean made the surprise announcement at a snap press conference in the NSW Parliament on Tuesday, hours after the Minnes Labor government handed down its second budget.

He declined to run for federal parliament and said that although he did not have a job, he would pursue a career in the private climate and energy sector.

“I haven’t decided anything yet,” he said. “I’ve been thinking about it for a while and I made up my mind over the weekend.”

“I am strongly committed to the Liberal Party. I always have been, I always will be,” he said.
“And I will continue to fight to ensure that liberal governments are elected at the local, state and federal levels.”

Kean, a powerful figure in the NSW Liberal faction, was rumored last year to be considering a move to Canberra if the Perrot government was defeated in the March 2023 election.

After the Coalition’s defeat he remained in NSW politics, serving as the opposition’s health spokesperson.

Keane has been the Hornsby MP since the 2011 election, when he entered state parliament in a landslide victory for the Coalition.

He served as Minister of Energy and Environment and Treasurer under the former coalition government.
Keane has been a leading, and sometimes the only, public voice within the Coalition on the threat of the climate crisis and the need for Australia to act more quickly to address it.

In late 2019, as bushfires were burning in the Black Summer and the Morrison government and right-wing media were rejecting claims that rising greenhouse gas emissions were increasing fire risk, Keane argued that the country was experiencing is “exactly what scientists have warned us will happen”.

In 2020, as Minister of Energy and Environment, he was the architect of the creation of the laws.

“Well, Mr. Keane will have to explain the reason behind why he has taken this particular job,” she said.
“We’re just going to continue to focus on what we think is the main game in town, and doing everything we can to create a long-term plan to drive down Australia’s energy prices.”

Queensland LNP senator and outspoken fossil fuel advocate Matt Canavan said he was not surprised or concerned by the news.

“My interest is not with Matt Kean, my interest is with the government,” Canavan told Sky News.
“Now Matt Keane is apparently on ‘Team Reckless Renewables’… Unfortunately, the once respected CSIRO has failed us, living in a fantasy land of spreadsheets rather than looking at what is happening in the real world. And Matt Keane was clearly listening to the people living in that imaginary country.

The opposition leader, Peter Dutton, last week unveiled the Coalition’s proposal to own and operate six or seven nuclear power sites across the country.

The plan was announced without any cost, nor was it estimated how much power it would bring to the system or how the opposition would meet the ambitious 2035-37 deadline for the first two plants.

Labor and many crossbenchers have criticized the proposal, labeling it a “risky scam” and a “pipe-dream”, while experts have also said it cannot be achieved within the time frame set by the Coalition and Due to this, electricity prices are likely to increase.

Asked about the Coalition’s plans to introduce nuclear power, Kean said that when he was NSW Energy Minister he considered moving away from coal, advising that it was too expensive and would take too long.

“I didn’t want to bankrupt the state,” Keane said. “And I didn’t want to pass those huge costs onto families.”
Bowen said on Monday that he had recommended Keane to the Prime Minister, who then tabled it to Cabinet, because “he was the best person for the job”.
“When I asked about possible replacements for [the outgoing president].
