In the final week of the 2001 season, Strahan awkwardly dismissed Favre when the Green Bay Packers quarterback tripped in front of the New York Giants star. Gastineau has clearly harbored that anger for a long time. While Strahan’s sack has always been controversial, Gastineau’s has never really been explored.
It is noteworthy that in 2021, Pittsburgh Steelers’ star rusher T.J. Watt finished the season with 22.5 sacks and did so while playing in only 15 games. Shortly after ESPN posted a clip of their conversation to tease their upcoming 30 for 30 project called The New York Sack Exchange, Favre jumped on social media to give his side of the story.
“I was not trying to hurt Marc Gastineau in any way,” Favre wrote. “I was trying to finish a game and squeeze the last bit of fun out of a hard-fought game.”
Favre further wrote that on the play, he simply called a bootleg play thinking it would be open. However, Strahan beat his man and was there to take him down.
“In a different play or situation, I would have made a greater effort to avoid a sack or TFL,” Favre wrote. “But at no time was I thinking of hurting Gastineau. Maybe the thought of helping Strahan had crossed my mind. I just didn’t think about it. That was not my strength at that time.
“I just wanted to have fun and compete. Looking back, I understand how Gastineau feels. We played a brutal game. Gastineau played during an era where people didn’t make generational wealth.”
Strahan still holds the record with 22.5, although Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt tied them in 2021. Two other players — Jared Allen in 2011 and Justin Houston in ’14 — tied Gastineau with 22 sacks.
