Josh Taylor and Jack Cattrall collide in one of the biggest grudge matches in recent British boxing history when they meet in Leeds on Saturday.

The rematch has been more than two years in the making after a controversial first fight in Glasgow in February 2022.

To most observers that night, Cattrall overpowered Taylor and did enough to dethrone the undisputed light-welterweight champion, only for the judges to award the victory to the Scott.

Now the bitter rivals will finally settle scores in a showdown, with promoter Eddie Hearn describing it as “the biggest British fight of the year so far”.
Inactivity has been a curse for both fighters since their first bout.

Taylor has stepped into the ring only once since, a points loss to American star Teofimo Lopez in New York last June.

It’s been three years since Taylor looked at his best – when he defeated Jose Ramirez in Las Vegas to become the first undisputed champion from Britain in the four-belt era – and we wonder whether the 33-year-old is still at his previous best. Capable of reaching great heights.

Catterall has fought only twice since his loss to Taylor, with a points win over Darragh Foley and 37-year-old Jorge Linares firmly in the category of solid rather than spectacular.

Make no mistake, this is a crossroads fight for both fighters. Since scaling the heights of becoming the undisputed 140lbs king in 2021, Taylor’s career has been on a downward trend.

Two poor performances against Cattrall and Lopez and numerous injury problems have made the last three years a struggle.

The points decision in the first Cattrall fight brought a flood of criticism from Taylor and, reputationally, it would have arguably been better for him if Cattrall’s hand had been taken instead.

Now Tartan Tornado has his chance to prove that he really did have an off night and remind those who have tried to diminish his accomplishments just what a fantastic fighter he is.

Mic’d Up Face Off

Josh Taylor: “He’s talking knockouts, he’s going to come out aggressive and try to be more flashy, which is great.
“I’ve seen a lot of gaps in his offensive game. He leaves a lot of gaps and a lot of holes to run into on a good sweet shot and it will be a goodnight Vienna.

“The last fight was bad for both of us. Jack was holding too much and screwing up, slowing down the pace. I was pretty bad too.

“I believe we can both be much better and it will be a better fight for the fans. It’s going to be a barnstormer.”
Jack Cattrall: “This is a fight that has been talked about for two years before and after the first fight, so our names have been linked.

“I thought I beat him and I thought I did it comfortably.
“In a way, it’s good for boxing and it’s good for us, the rivalry we’ve created, but to win convincingly, draw a line under it and move on with my career, it would be nice.”

Joe McNally (Taylor’s trainer): “I really believe at heart, the best Josh Taylor comes out, the best Jack Cattrall, Josh wins. But we can’t settle for anything other than vintage Josh Taylor.

“He will perform and can probably stop Jack between eight and nine. I think it might have to do with them winning the undisputed championship. I know that’s what it means to him.”

Jamie Moore (Catterall’s trainer): “Nobody at this level should overlook a guy like Josh Taylor and say, ‘I hope he’s not as good as he was.’

“It’s especially crazy because he’s losing to a guy like Teofimo Lopez – an absolutely phenomenal fighter.
“Everyone is flowing in the hope that Josh has had the best past, or at least the people who want Jack to win. They’re hoping he gets through a lot of injuries, but I have to train Jack and get him ready to be the best Josh Taylor can be.

“I still believe Jack can beat him because I have more confidence in his ability than Josh Taylor.”
