The Washington Commanders have traded wide receiver Jahan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles for a trio of draft picks, it was announced Thursday.
In exchange for Dotson, the Commanders will send the Eagles a 2025 fifth-round draft pick and receive a third-round pick and two seventh-round picks in the 2025 draft.
Dotson, 24, has now become another offensive weapon for Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. He joins Saquon Barkley, tight end Dallas Goedert, as well as fellow wide receivers A.J. Will join the race with. Brown and Devonta Smith.
The Eagles were looking for stability at the No. 3 receiver spot and tried to work out Brit Covey, John Ross, Parris Campbell and rookie Johnny Wilson with the first team during training camp.
Dotson could not hold down the No. 2 receiver position with the Commander in front of Terry McLaurin. His 7.4% drop percentage last season ranked 10th in the NFL.
With Dotson gone, Olamide Zaccheus, Dyami Brown, Luke McCaffrey, Jamison Crowder and Martavis Bryant join the names that will compete for the spots succeeding veteran McLaurin.
Dotson, a 2022 first-round draft pick out of Penn State, caught 49 passes for 518 yards and four touchdowns for the Commanders last season. The 24-year-old is entering his third year in the NFL and has totaled 84 receptions, 1,041 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns

“Yeah, really excited to get here and see the candidates that we have,” general manager Howie Roseman said before the first practice of the summer. “We’ve brought in guys that we feel have talent and the ability to contribute for us, but to sit here and say it’s not something we’re going to look at every day and see who moves on And what kind of chemistry you have with Jalen (Hurts), that’s important.
“You know, I think you’ll see it throughout the league, this situation is an important situation. We brought in guys in free agency, drafted some guys. I think it’s something we’ll continue to watch on a daily basis along with other things to see who moves forward.”
During the 16 practices of training camp, the Eagles used Parris Campbell, John Ross, Johnny Wilson and Briton Covey in that WR3 role. Despite all of those having some good moments, the addition of Dotson is clearly an upgrade and strengthens one of the only weak spots of an offense that has the potential to be elite.
In Kellen Moore’s offense, the Eagles are expected to move their receivers around a lot. During training camp, we saw Smith take a lot of reps in the slot. Dotson has played both outside and inside the slot in his two NFL seasons, which seems important in this offense. Dotson, 24, was the 16th overall pick in the 2022 draft out of Penn State. Dotson (5-11, 182) has played in 29 games over 26 starts with the Commanders over the past two years. As a rookie in 2022, the Nazareth High School product had 35 catches for 523 yards and 7 touchdowns. His figures in 2023 were 49/518/4.
But the Commanders have a new coaching staff in place in 2024, and it appears Dotson isn’t finding favor. The Eagles get Dotson with a two-year contract and three years of team control.
With the Eagles, Dotson was clearly A.J. Has moved into the WR3 role behind. Brown and Devonta Smith. That third wide receiver was under question throughout training camp and none of the candidates really presented themselves as Al.

The Washington Commanders are moving on from one of their recent first-round selections. Washington will send wide receiver Jahan Dotson and a fifth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a third-round pick and two seventh-round picks. The Eagles confirmed the deal Thursday morning.
The move comes a week after head coach Dan Quinn publicly stated that several players, including Dotson, were vying for the No. 2 receiver job behind Terry McLaurin. Despite the draft pedigree, Dotson did not stand out, it could have been taken as a sign that something like this was coming.
In two seasons with Washington, Dotson has posted 35 catches for 523 yards and seven touchdowns and 49 receiving catches for 517 yards and four touchdowns. Via True Media, his yards per reception and per game average declined in Year 2, as well as his target rate and yards per route run number.
With Dotson out, Washington will likely rely on third-round picks Luke McCaffrey, Olamide Zackios and Dymie Brown for wide receiver snaps behind McLaurin. No. 2 overall pick Jaden Daniels’ pass-catching group also includes Zach Ertz and rookie Ben Sinnott, with Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler rounding out the backfield.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, gets a chance to get back to the position that made Dotson a first-round pick, and do so at a relatively low cost. Eagles A.J. Looking for a No. 3 receiver to complement the . Brown and Devonta Smith; They signed DeVante Parker earlier this offseason, but saw him retire before he could suit up for them. Philadelphia has received minimal passing-game production from its wide receivers outside of Brown and Smith over the past few years, and acquiring Dotson could help fill that void.

Now let’s grade the business…

There’s no way to portray this as anything other than a loss for Washington. Dotson was selected in the first round just two years ago and played two underwhelming.

Even entering training camp, it was clear the Eagles would look to add another receiver.

Jahan Dotson loses his sleeper status now that he’s with the Philadelphia Eagles: Dotson has shifted from being a potential slot receiver on a team that heavily targets the slot to one of the last options on any pass play. Is.
• DeVonta Smith could be a big winner in a trade: Smith has excelled in the slot throughout his career, and this move allows him to see more snaps at his optimal spot while Dotson’s lines are spread out.

The move will hurt Dotson’s fantasy value due to a significant increase in target competition.
With the Commanders, his primary competition was Terry McLaurin, who has posted 82.1 receiving grades over the past two seasons. He competed for looks with Curtis Samuel, a solid but not exceptional starting wide receiver, and Logan Thomas, who graded below replacement level over the same span.
Now, A.J. Dotson will be the fourth option in passing plays behind. Brown, Devonta Smith and Dallas Goedert at tight end. As a result, it would likely take an injury to one of the Eagles’ other top receivers to make Dotson fantasy-relevant this year, making him unobtainable in most standard fantasy leagues.
Although Jalen Hurts, A.J. For this it will not have any special meaning. Brown or Dallas Goedert, this could be good news for DeVonta Smith.
Over the last three seasons, Smith has averaged 2.48 yards per route from the slot, while averaging 1.65 yards at the wideout. Last season, Olamide Zaccheus led the Eagles in wide receiver snaps from the slot (304), with Quazz Watkins and Julio Jones also playing over 100 snaps. No other wide receiver in Philadelphia earned a receiving grade above 65.0 from the slot, while Smith graded at 77.7.
