Hiram Casten, the New York comedian who gained popularity on sitcoms including “Seinfeld,” has died. He was 71 years old.

According to an obituary published by the Batavian, Castenbaum died Sunday in the arms of his wife, Diana Kissil Castenbaum, at their New York home “just hours after their 38th wedding anniversary” after a battle with prostate cancer and Crohn’s disease.

Kasten, born Hiram Z. Kastenbaum on October 30, 1952, was best known for his supporting role as Alan Benes’ co-worker Michael on “Seinfeld.” The comedian met Jerry Seinfeld while doing stand-up at Comic Strip Live in New York City, where Seinfeld served as MC. The obituary said the comedians “formed a friendship that lasted 45 years.”

Casten’s prolific exposure to the New York comedy scene included appearances at clubs such as the Improv, the Comedy Cellar, Caroline’s and Dangerfield’s.

Casten also appeared in several other TV shows, including “Mad About You,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Saved by the Bell” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

Casten retired from the entertainment industry in 2017 as her health began to decline, but she only told friends in the last six months about the seriousness of her diagnosis. His obituary states, “His great comedy and the artistic community rallied behind him,” and “some traveled to Batavia to meet him, there were late-night Zoom meetings with friends on both coasts and into the wee hours of the morning.” Till gone.”

Kasten’s wife, Diana Kissil Kastenbaum, first announced her husband’s death on Facebook on Sunday. In the post, Diana wrote that her husband’s health deteriorated in 2017 during a lifelong battle with prostate cancer and Crohn’s disease.

“He is survived by his loving wife, Diana Kissil Kastenbaum of Batavia, New York, who loved and cared for him to the end,” the post reads.
Diana wrote that they married in June 1986, and “she died in his arms on June 16, 2024, just hours after their 38th wedding anniversary.”
Kastenbaum shared with Fox News Digital that a public memorial service will be held in Los Angeles this summer, but dates have not yet been set.

The social media post shared said Casten had only told friends about the severity of his illness for the past six months.

Casten appeared as Michael on “Seinfeld” from 1993 to 1994. Casten became famous after being a frequent artist in the comic strip in New York, where his friend Jerry Seinfeld once performed. He also performed stand-up at the Improv, The Comedy Cellar, Carolines on Broadway, and Dangerfield’s during his career.
According to Diana’s post, Seinfeld “passed Hiram on his first audition, and he became a regular.” Jerry and Hiram’s “friendship lasted 45 years.”

Hiram is survived by his wife and daughter, Millicent Jade.

Casten is best known for his role as Michael on “Seinfeld” from 1993 to 1994. His character was a co-worker of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character Ellen Benes.
The actor made his mark in the world of comedy by making a name for himself on the NYC circuit after becoming a regular performer in the comic strip – an iconic venue that once hosted Jerry Seinfeld.
Seinfeld “passed Hiram on his first audition and he became a regular,” Diana wrote in the post, adding that the pair “formed a friendship that lasted 45 years.”

Kasten also claimed friendship with Michael Richards, Paul Reiser, Larry Miller, and Mark Schiff.
